Using latest merlin on RT-66NU. Just switched from ASUS drivers because of dropped connectivity problems. Merlin fixed this but my attached USB drive is not showing up as a "drive" in the network section of my PC so I can see folders, write to disk. I can only click on the device and it will open up windows media center. I have Upnp configured and when I am using mobile devices on the LAN it can "see" the folders and choose files to play okay. using The ASUS software it showed up as a drive under the network tab and could access, read and write just like a regular drive. Not sure why merlin handles differently that stock asus software. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Make sure it is enabled at USB Application > Media Services and Servers > Network Place (Samba) Share / Cloud Disk

Not sure if this helps, but here goes ....

I saw something similar with a USB stick attached to an AC-RT66U. I found the only way to map a drive letter to the USB stick installed in the router was as follows:

1- use a PC to create a folder on the USB stick
2- plug the USB stick into the router
3- use Windows Explorer from the PC to map a drive letter to the folder on the USB stick.

There was no way in Windows I could access the root of the USB stick after it was plugged into the router. I could access only the folder I had just created and all files and folders below it.

Not a big deal, it just meant all the folders on the stick had to be one level deeper.

Details:
USB stick formatted FAT32, was using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, router was RT-AC66U, firmware was probably Merlin 376.349_5 when I discovered this (did not check if it is still the case in later versions)

Thanks for your replies,

i Have Samba enabled already with allow guest login and share enabled, and the mobile devices on the network show it just fine as a folder that can be delved into.

Created a folder on the drive with a PC and plugged back in to router no change,PC still shows router under the "media devices", which clicked opens windows media center, and shows under "network infrastructure", which when clicked opens the router login page.

It worked fine with the old ASUS firmware.

Any other ideas?

I'm going to tell you up front I'm not going to be of any help but ...

I had the same problem with Asus stock. Media share worked, no file share. I clicked everything I could find for a day, Asus and Windows side, and suddenly it started working. But by then my mind was fried. I couldn't even remember if my last change was on the Windows side or the Asus side.

An hour later it was down. Then it came back. Then it was gone again.

The next day I ejected both flash drives. Noticed they were hot to the touch. Flashed Merlin. Reset to factory and manually reconfigured. Recalling "hot to touch" I put in only one flash drive and set up the file serve first (as I "thought" that "might" have been what I did when I got it working with Asus stock). It worked. Then I set up media share. It worked (except I have to "right click" to get media share otherwise it goes to the Asus login screen). Media share was pretty neat, it read my file share and categorized everything as pics, videos, etc.

It's been solid for a week or two. I even rebooted and it all came right back up.

Like I said upfront, no help here except to say there was light at the end of ...

BTW Getting my Chromebook to work with this was problematic. Couldn't get Google's file extension to work with it. Have a non-google one that's working. Any tips?
