USB Drive Sharing Permission Issues

Hello,

I apologize in advance if this is somewhat of a newbie question.

I am having issues writing data to an WD external HDD drive connected via USB to my RT-N56U.

Windows says it is write protected and can't modify any data (via WinExplorer or FTP connection in Total Commander).

I am using the latest stock firmware (1.0.1.8g). Network share is set without without accounts (should't need any passwords), FTP has admin account set.

Strange thing is that any change brought to the Sharing Permission rules within the Windows Explorer Properties dialog box don't "stick". After hitting "apply" the sharing permissions remain the same. (as attached).


I remember being able to fix this at some point, but I do not recall what method I used and I'm feeling pretty frustrated now seeing this is back.

Any suggestions?

Also, if this is an issue with a simple fix, could anyone please submit a simple step by step tutorial for properly setting up network share with the RT-N56U?

You can't set permissions from a windows client on this setup.

If I remember correctly, you need to telnet to the router (turn on telnet on the router first), navigate to the USB drive and change the permissions. You can use the 'mount' command to find the USB drive directory (see below for the bold text example).

Example:
Telnet 192.168.1.1
RT-N56U login: admin
Password: (enter the routers password)

mount

...
/dev/sda1 on /media/AiDisk_a1 type ufsd (rw,noatime,nls=utf8,uid=0,gid=0,fmask=0,dmask=0,sparse,force)

cd /media/AiDisk_a1
chmod -R 777 *
exit

You don't need to do this every time. Only if things aren't working. Normally, you just connect the USB drive, then browse from client machine's Network Neighborhood to the router; ex: \\RT-N56U\AiDisk_a1 and you should be able to read/write to the drive.
