First post here, but thanks for all the previous help here just browsing the forums while researching a network bridge between two houses. Here's my new problem:
My comcast modem is at one end of my house, and I've run 100ft Cat5e cable to the other end where my wireless router is. My xBox resides right next to my Comcast modem, but it's running off the wifi from the wireless router from the other side of the house, resulting in occasional slow performance when playing games. I would really like to avoid running another 100ft cable all the way back through the house to the xBox, and it seems redundant with the modem right there next to it. I need to leave my router at the other end bc it's sharing internet with the next house via directional antenna. My question is:
Can I get a network switch and just plug my WAN Ethernet cable, my xBox, and my wireless router into it and everything will work right? Thinking about it, I'm not sure if the router could assign an IP to my xBox back through the WAN port of the router though.
So assuming it doesn't work, if I get a wired router instead of a network switch, will any old 10/100Mbps router be able to deliver real throughput speeds of 50Mbps, or should I look for a gigabit router?
Right now my setup is:
Comcast modem in the back of house w/ 50Mbps speed (next to xBox).
ASUS RT-AC66U router in the front w/ directional antenna pointing at my sister's house. (So I can't move it.)
Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks.
