Various questions about wireless networking equipment

Yes, AP using AC are scarce today but it will improve

My comments are mixed when it comes to D-Link, Netgear and Linksys. Some have major problems with these brand, some don't. But again, some also have major problems with ASUS or other brands too. It could be a hit and miss. I personally don't have problems with my AC66U but there are quite a few that do have.

Depends on which devices you'll connect. If you say "I only have N devices and will use them for 2 or 3 or more years" , I'd suggest the ASUS since it's faster on the 2.4 band. If you say "look, I have N devices currently but would like to future-proof a bit and will get 5GHz AC ones in the future, *and* I can live with the lower throughput on the 2.4 band for a while" then I'd recommend the D-Link :)
Unless my understanding and/or calculation is wrong...

56.25mb/s vs 37.5mb/s

hmmm it's a tough choice.

Anyway, currently i am using AirPort Express (2nd Generation) as my router and AirPort Express (1st Generation) as an AP. I don't seem to be able to find what's the maximum throughput in the specifications. Am I missing out on something?

Bookmark this to calculate easy in the future. I'm bad at math myself and also use it :)

I don't know anything on Apple routers so I cant comment. :(

I mean in terms of specifications, where do I find the stated "speed"?

The only thing I could find on this router is the observed speed on the 5ghz band, quoting the article http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/network-wifi/3372637/apple-airport-express-80211n-2nd-generation/

We tested the Apple AirPort Express 802.11n (2nd Generation) for performance and could comfortably transfer files at around 94 Mbps using the 5GHz band.

Since it has 100Mbps as LAN/WAN ports, it cannot go above 100Mbps on the wireless side. Well, it can, but the wired ports can send a max of 100Mbps so even if the wireless is, say, 300Mbps the other 200Mbps will never be used. Also, if you use WiFi -> WiFi then you're using it as repeater which sucks up up to half the bandwidth

ah. alright. not affected now as my internet is only 100mbps.

knowing this - the current AP Express is a decent 2 stream dual-band AP - the AP Express single band - it was primarily a travel router first, and an audio/printer client - I actually would recommend moving over to an AirPort Extreme 11ac as the primary, and use the dual-band AP Express as a secondary AP - and put the older AirPort express into the travel bag...

If you look thru the threads here - not a lot of questions about Apple AP's - it's not that people don't buy them - many do - but those devices generally tend to just work when plugged in and configured... stable and reasonably fast, although at a slight price premium...
