Very very basic question on install

Hi. I have been searching, but the world has moved on enough that is it hard to find the simplest basics. At least I am not getting anywhere.

I have an early rt-n66u. It was made before memory over 32MB was usable. I loaded Merlin's 3.0.0.4.264.22. I want to get to the current release.

Can anyone please point me to a very simple and basic procedure that does not leave out or gloss over steps because "everyone knows that"? I am an everyone; and I don't know that.

I would appreciate understanding before I brick the router.

Goto your web interface, 192.168.1.1 > Administration > Firmware Upgrade and flash the latest release. Coming from such an old firmware version you will probably want to do a Factory Reset, Admin > Restore/Save/Upload Setting > Factory Default and then redo your settings manually, dont back up from a file.

Also, its very hard to brick an Asus router, it has a recovery mode that helps you get back to stock firmware in case of a problem. Recovery Mode: Power off, hold in reset, power on, goto web interface.

I seem to remember there was something special to do because the base unit only addressed 32K. Am I hallucinating?

As I recall, if you stick to RMerlin or Asus firmware then you don't need to worry about it.

Be prepared to have all your settings reset back to factory default if the firmware you are currently running is still only addressing 32 KB of nvram.
