VLANs on APs

Suppose I have two of the same routers, both running the 3.0.0.6 firmware w/VLAN support. If I configure one as router and another as AP, will the VLANs from the router translate to the AP automatically?

I think I would need to configure the ethernet port that connects to the AP as Trunk, correct? Everything else (DHCP, schedules etc) should automagically work across the network?

Automatically - No. Manual configuration - Yes, eventually. Check if AP Mode allows what you need.

Thanks @Tech9

I don't have any way to check at the moment. Waiting for the Merlin firmware for my router for 3.0.0.6 to try the setup. Was hoping someone who is running 3.0.0.6 on their router and AP to chime in.

On Ubiquiti gear (router + AP, no Asus gear), does the AP require manual config as well?

If I add OPNSense as my router configure the VLANs there and use the Asus gear (that supports VLANs) as APs, will the VLANs still work?

On the Asus router under Guest Network Pro, there is a setting for the VLAN to use its own DHCP server. I guess that would be left turned off on the AP as the router will handle all the DHCP requests for all the VLANs and the main LAN.

You can't have automatic configuration on... custom configuration. Ubiquiti APs are different than most home use devices and are best managed by a Controller. Ubiquiti Gateways can do 255 VLANs and APs can have 8 SSIDs per radio carrying multiple VLANs each. This is all custom configuration options. The APs after adoption are just available hardware and the sysadmin has to tell them what to do.

If you have no hardware and need new devices - better go with PoE switch and PoE APs from small business category. Ubiquiti UniFi, TP-Link Omada, Cisco CBW series, HPE Aruba have some lower priced models, MikroTik wAP... there are better options than home routers.
