End of story, I did not dare open the vpn connection until I had received better confirmation that NAT was disabled on the ISP router. I was 99% sure that was part of the problem - and finally today I got in touch with the head of technical at ISP and he understood what I wanted. He found that NAT still was enabled, but disabled it for me. Confirmed and checked just now.
The case started exactly one month ago, on 19th June when I received a replacement router from the ISP. At least three times I received confirmation on my demand that NAT was disabled, but that was not true. It is a well-known fact that double NAT creates problems, e.g. for VPN.
