WAN and LAN traffic statistics

Hi everybody. I read that Asuswrt-Merlin can track detailed statistics of traffic.
What I wanted to know if how this traffic is monitored. A specific IP or MAC will be counted only for the traffic to or from WAN, or just every type of traffic (both WAN and LAN). Or can this be tracked separately?
For example, a NAS connected to LAN1 generating traffic across the LAN but not to/from internet, how will be seen by the software?

The router cannot see LAN to LAN traffic, because it's switched by the four ports switch, not routed by the firmware.

IPTraffic is on a LAN IP basis, counting the amount of Internet traffic for each LAN IP. There's no protocol breakdown, and no statistics regarding the remote ends.

That would require an entire new implementation, as the current one is based on an iptables module that tracks down IPs, not MACs.

Just make static ip adresses based on MAC's and you will get the same result.

Ok, no problem.
One last question (feel free to answer or not). I am looking for a modem-only to use together with an Asus router. I need a modem with snr tweaking (like Broadcom chipset). Any suggestion?
