WAN Lease Time at 5 Mintues

New Around Here
hello all. I have the Asus RT-AC68u for just a little over two months. Recently I have noticed not being able to connect onto the internet. After random drops for few days. I started to troubleshoot the problem. I had my ISP tech guy come and check the signal. He didnt see any problems at all. He did changed my modem and changed a piece of hardware on the pole in the street. The problem didnt go away. So what was happening... i started to noticed my modem light turning from all green to orange, then all back to green. I started to check on the Asus... and noticed the WAN Lease time is at 5 mintues. when the internet goes out, the Lease Expired happens after 2:30 (which is about right) Right now I am back on my old DLink router. Signal is fine. No internet drop. MOdem isnt trying to get an IP address.

So what happen?? is something wrong w/. my Asus? I called my ISP tech guy... and i asked why is my WAN Lease time at 5 mins. he said I should be able to change it... normally its 24 hours. Tired to tell him not LAN or WAN.. then he said then something is wrong with my router because I should be able to change it. DAMN techie... tried telling again its their end.. I gave up and said nevermind.

when all this was happen, I was using the latest firmware. now im using Merlin and I even used DD-WRT firmware too.

$200 and its not working. grrrrrr

right now i have the Asus setup as an AP and DLink as an Router. Originally I was using the DLink as AP....

WAN lease time is indeed determined by the ISP, and completely out of the control of either the router or the end-user. That tech support guy obviously had no clue what he was talking about, and probably only had enough technical knowledge to read through troubleshooting scripts.

Typically, ISPs might hand out shorter leases if there is a known maintenance window in your area, or if there was an issue with a previous connection (I've seen cases where you would be handed a shorter lease, and the following lease would be back to a regular long time one).

However, if you have a LED changing colour on your modem then this is the first thing that will need looked at, before anything else. Which LED is critical to know there. See your modem's manual to determine what this LED's colour means.

In case your ISP might be confused (that can happen if you switch router/device behind the modem), try a complete reset of your connection. To do this, turn your modem off for 5-10 minutes, then turn it back on. Ideally, leave the modem off for a whole night, and plug it back in the morning if you want to be sure.

internet got dropped again. DLINK sys log

i just unplug the Asus Router (acting as Access Point). Let's see what happen...

Thanks Merlin. ya, that techie guy didnt know or understand. I give up since its harder to explain using online chat (typing) then voice talking. lol

I'll give that a try again. I'm pretty sure I did that too. Currently I have the DLink running as an Router and its fine. I did turn the Asus Router into Access Point, and the problem came back within the hour. Unplug the Asus and its been running for over 8 hours and no drops.

I just email Asus Tech suppost and explain the problem to them.
