Currently using a RT-AC68U. Wanting to improve blind spots by adding a 2nd router as a repeater &/or upgrading my router to a newer model. What are the differences between 68U and 86U for example other than transmit speeds?

The AC86U is based on the new HND platform and has a significantly improved CPU with hardware encryption support so you can get VPN speeds of ~250Mbps. The extra CPU power will also help with SMB transfers and third party scripts. Pretty solid all round unit.

So then your saying it is a better fit for my 1tb fibre net to get full capacity? ;-)

Its a pretty noticeable upgrade. Depending on your budget there's also the new AX88U to take into account, but client implementation is still some time away before you see the real benefits there. Essentially it comes down to what device suits your needs best.

Just got an ac86u to replace my ac68u. Nothing wrong with the 68u, just wanted the 86u. Does seem to have better WiFi coverage.
