Hi,
I just wonder if you can think of any competitors to the Asus routers + Merlin software combo.
I mean a moderm wireless router + an easy to install/use (GUI based) alternative firmware.
I think there's not much going out there, am I right?
Tomato/Gargoyle runs on older hardare...
Maybe Synology ones? From what I read they don't need an alternative firmware, the original one is kept regularly updated for features/security.
Not sure about Ubiquity security.. and of course if I'll be able to configure it!

Cheers

Maybe Padavan firmware? I dont think its a direct competitor
Same thinking: none available!

Remember: Most routers have the SAME hardware from Broadcom, Qualcomm or Atheros - THE SOFTWARE makes the difference!!!

The only firmware that i found superior to Merlin is those Chinese fork (Xiaobao and Koolshare) of Merlin itself, they take the latest version and they add more useful options (more about rooting, encryptions, VPN, DNS, torenting, Adblockers.... Etc ) they even add an app store, you can install more apps that have UI integrated into the firmware. So you have all those scripts you find in this forum in an app that you can install, manage and uninstall easily without any terminal command, directly from the UI.
I hope the original Merlin firmware get those options, i love their "software center"

Since they have a complete disregard of my GPL licence, it's never gonna happen - they don't provide any source code.

Yes thats true, i know about the GPL issue, but, i don't mean there will be a fusion or cooperation between the two firmwares, i mean i hope we can have same options since all those addons they add are open-source, also if we can have a centralised platform (like their app store "software center") to be able to integrate all scripts and applets posted in this forum in the UI as they did. I know its a lot of work but it will be a revolution and we realy need some apps like they have

Entware-NG probably already offers far more applications than their store, and the whole Entware-NG repo is also open sourced.

Yes you are right, but there is no UI on entware apps as opposed to their store apps

Glad they did not "port" my ad-blocker. But then, it would be fun to install and test a fork...

They have something called "Adbyby" in both merlin-koolshare and padavan firmware, i don't know if it's based on your code or not

Edit: there is a moded padavan firmware too with more options as the moded Asus-merlin

Time to install it on an isolated router, checking out the features.
