Why are NAS devices so expensive

Windows 8. Synctoy, task scheduler, calibre server, itunes, iTunes updater, IIS, RDP, WinSCP, WOL of other machines on my network through the server probably some other things if I think about it long enough. Some of those features are found on Synology/QNAP operating systems, but a number of them are not possible.

Also SMB3 with SMB Multichannel.
 
Like any dedicated devices, you get what you pay for. Stability and reliability aren't cheap (especially these days), so a lot of it is a supply and demand thing too. Why charge less when people pay more?
 
For me, the DS212 was about $200 diskless. I had one 2TB to use, and shopped/bought the 2nd.
Free software upgrades.
Lots of free sophisticated apps, for desktops, tablets, smart phones.
Very nice backup and time backup/versioning tools with simple UI.

Very good value in my case.
