Just got a new NAS and a bunch of new WD Reds now normally I would test the drive for bad sectors after installing it in my system and then put it into useage. If I just plug the new HDD into the fresh NAS (TVS-463) will it do this process for me before it tries to setup the RAID I want or should I still do that externally before plugging them into the NAS?

I'd test the drives on a Linux or Windows machine where all the good drive tests tools can be found.

Beware RAID1 protects only for drive failure. IMO that's less likely than
Human error in admin NAS
File system corruption of malware
Theft of NAS.

some use two volumes, not RAID1.

1-2-3 backup! USB3 or eSATA.

Yes, the QNAP will test new drives. Set it up as a separate volume (don't add it to RAID yet). QNAP has both a basic test routine as well two levels of SMART testing.
