Will VPN work when RT-N66U operates as an access point?

Does the Merlin'ed RT-N66U need to be in router mode for the OpenVPN function to work? In other words, will the VPN still work if RT-N66U is in access point mode? The reason is because the setting I have can not use RT-N66U as a router. thank you so much.

No. OpenVPN requires routing functionality to work, so it will only work properly while in router mode.

Yes - with some manual work

You can enable OpenVPN in Access Point mode but you have to perform all of the operations manually using a remote shell. You also have to have jffs enabled so you can write configuration files and perform the installation.

I have my router setup this way and manually setup OpenVPN and it works very well.

Many options are disabled in AP mode. The router needs to be in Router mode to be able to control things like VPN too.

You need to bridge the ISP provided modem/router and give full responsibility of your network to the RT-AC3200 you have. Then, (with a public IP address on the Asus router) you will be able to setup VPN easily.

Do a search for yorgi's excellent VPN tutorials on these forums.

There is also the option to double NAT your router behind your primary router. With this setup you will be able to run the VPN on the second routet.

The N66 doesn't really have the power to run your VPN if you need maximum bandwidth. Using the N66 anticipate getting no more than 40 - 60% of your download speed from your ISP.

Without knowing the ISP the OP is provided, a percentage of that is just a guess (at best).

The single core 600MHz RT-N66U is very slow with OpenVPN usage.

OP, what is your ISP connection and what are you expecting the VPN to perform at?
