No traffic will go over VPN even if you use director (per device or net doesn't matter). It flat out will not work. Wireguard sure connects just fine, but Merlin is broken. Openvpn worked fine on stock firmware, but slow as balls.

What a waste of time and $55 (ax58u).

There are plenty on these boards who successfully use WireGuard. As for VPNs being slow, if you have an asynchronous connection you'll either be limited by the processing power of the router, or the slower of your broadband up/down speeds.
*Assuming you are setting the router up as a server and are configuring remote devices as clients.

Elucidate your problem beyond 'Wireguard VPN doesn't work' and I am sure someone will be able to help.

Many people are using Wireguard ... it does work !!!

There are many clever & helpful people in these forums, give them a chance to help before you write off Merlin & all the wonderful addons.

I know openvpn is slow. Stupid SoCs without AES. But it's the reason for wanting wireguard.
I've seen plenty of threads with the same problem. Maybe it works on older f/w, idk. I want hours of life back from toggling and resetting. TTL script works perfectly 🤣

I've used every custom firmware for many years (I'm 40 😭) and never had such a glaring bug. I don't believe it's Proton as it connects instantly.

Should've just gone pfsense.

WG doesn't work ? I have 5 simultaneous different WG VPNs ( 4 x Mullvad + 1 Proton ( free) ) and two OPVPN's ( Express) running as we speak .. on one Merlin router ...

Wireguard sure connects just fine
And how are you determining that? For starter, Wireguard does not "connect". It mounts an interface, and sends traffic through that interface. If your interface or routing is misconfigured, you won't get an error message or anything.

If you want people to help you fix your setup you will have to provide more technical details. Your personal conclusion is visibly inaccurate since there are plenty of users here who are using WireGuard without issue, and nobody can help you unless you provide more details.

Or maybe WireGuard just isn't for you. WireGuard by design is very different from any other VPN technology you are familiar with, as it's not designed in a typical client-server setup.

Pro tip. Rather than ranting about it not working on a $55 router, why not post how you setup WireGuard (as a server or as a client) and what troubleshooting steps you have performed to determine its not working. Wireguard DOES work when properly configured.

No issues using WireGuard to connect to Proton VPN Free once it was properly configured. You will need to setup a rule in VPN Director to route the network clients over the WireGuard tunnel.

Also, no issues using the WireGuard Server on Asus-Merlin. Use it to access the local network from a remote location.
