I would like to upgrade my NAS to usb 3.

I would like some comments on what direction I should go.

Should I wait and get a RT-AC87U

Should I wait and buy a RT-AC68U when the 87 comes out and the prices drop.

Should I buy the RT-AC68U now.

My network is gigabit mostly and hard wired. The tablets and phones are not the backbone but exist. The router would need to be supported by RMerlin. Future proofing/cost are variables.

Thanks

A NAS is Ethernet connected, not USB (2.0 or 3.0) connected.

Suggest you upgrade to a proper NAS now and simply plug it in your current network to enjoy substantially faster speeds with whatever router you're currently using.

As for which AC class router to buy: the RT-AC68U is the only consideration as of right now (with RMerlin firmware). The RT-AC87U is a long way away right now.

Playing what-if games is okay for a few minutes, but don't base any decisions on something that you obviously don't seem to need right now.

Thank you for jumping on my terminology and yes you are right.

Thank you for the suggestion but no, usb is what runs my optware, transmission, other scripts that run at boot. I hot swap my backup drives and store them in a fire box, I have no need for a true NAS. Any advice on what I asked would be appreciated. The usb 3 speed transfer is what I am looking for.

If I wait for the 87 it would be a year after it comes out. I know all usb devices were not created equal. What transfer speed do people get from the ac68?

Regards

You can see the SNB USB 3.0 results Tim has done on this site for the RT-AC68U and the R7000. At this point; the Netgear R7000 has the best USB 3.0 speeds.

Hi,
Even better if dd-wrt is loaded on R7000.
