Hello,

i'm a newbie on this site and in networking also.
I have trouble with my wireless range and the lastest merlin firmware 378.55,
i come from an dd-wrt firmware and would try this firmware who looks good.
I live in an little town and my neighbor are far so no interference.
I have an android phone with wifi N, and configure the routeur on the 2.4ghz for more range,
i try with only N, 40mhz, protection b/g disable etc... nothing change the range is much less than before.
I have made an hard reset.

So if anyone can help me have more range.

The best range we have achieved is with the ASUS RT-N66U using John's fork of Merlin's firmware. A further increase can be had by using antennas with gain, such as these.

Forget about bonding channels for 40MHz of bandwidth. That is unlikely to help the range, and may harm it. A range of 100' or so outdoors should be easy, less indoors of course.

I install the John firmware and it's better but i don't know why with the dd-wrt firmware i could cover all my house.
The problem with dd-wrt is for installing the vpn client, doesn't work.
For the moment i stay on John.

See my 2.4ghz and 5ghz options below and they work perfect in my small house with alot of thick old walls and in my sisters 3500 sq ft modern home...no issues with coverage...key is to use 20mhz bandwidth with 2.4ghz and use a channel not used by anyone nearby...works like a charm.

Are you saying that it makes sense to apply this fork, replacing Merlin's 378.55 build on an RT-N66U?

Both Merlin and John are good for security. If you need more range, use John's. If range is not an issue, check out both and see which features or interface you prefer.

Thanks Dlandiss, I'll give the Fork a try and run it a bit to see how wifi (etc...) performs in my home environment.

Yes, John's fork makes a significant difference in coverage on my N66U, but be sure and bump the power level up after installing.

John's fork is rock solid and gives much better range then any of the newer Asus or Merlin builds. Asus started capping all there routers to only 80mw of output because they were sued by Netgear for not being honest with there output levels. Netgear won the suit. Funny thing is i have to believe Netgear is using more power then 80mw because my R-7000 has a much better 5 GHz signal then my RT-AC68U. Go figure !!

When you say bump up the power lever, are you talking about the Wireless - Professional Tx Power Adjustment setting? I've moved if from the default 80mW to 100mW.

You can also try the hggomes fork of the latest RMerlin firmware too for increased range. PM hggomes for the link to the downloads.

The upcoming '378.55.4' unreleased version will offer some further benefits too it seems.
