Hey folks,

I have a few questions for you.
First off -- I have the RT-N66U router. Had is since late last year. Love the little thing.

Since I moved however, I'm having massive issues with wireless. I have both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz SSIDs the same. Should this be different?

My Roku 2 XS has massive issues on wireless. Not sure why -- I've tried changing channels on both 2.4 and 5 Ghz.

Yes, I live in a neighborhood where the airwaves are CRAMMED with 2Wire devices by AT&T Uverse all on channel 6, so I bumped out to channel 9 on 2.4GHz.

My laptop is horrendous. It connects at 144Meg (according to Windows 7. Wireless device is a Wireless N 1030 by Intel Centrino) Now if I got the bandwidth of 144Meg I'd be happy, but I get about, 60K on a good day.

The router is in my basement, but my living room is DIRECTLY above the router. The Roku 2 XS is across the house, but still reports Excellent signal conditions.

A little bit about the network now. Crappy Comcast Modem/Router all in one unit from Comcast Business. Disabled its internal DHCP and have a static IP set to the Asus Router (I pay for 5 static IPs). I have a direct connection to the 'media server'. The router is connected to a newer Netgear 1gig 8 port hub. In said hub I have Raspberry Pi and my webserver (low traffic). From this hub I have a good Cat5e line to my living room connected to a MonoPrice 8 port gig hub which ties in my TV, PS3, Xbox, AV Receiver.

Cables are all high quality monoprice cables.

What can I do to fix the wireless? All other settings except the basic channel (set to 9) are set on auto. Please help!
 
what firmware version are you using in the router? there have been problems with some firmware versions on the 5ghz band, especially with intel wifi chips, there is a new firmware due out soon that will hopefully fix the problems, in the meantime if you have version 3.0.0.4.370 or 372 try downgrading to 3.0.0.4.272 this should help with the wifi on 5ghz, as far as i have read the 2.4ghz band is unaffected

How does a wired connection work?

Why not give the 5Ghz its own unique SSID so you can connect to 5GHz?

You can buy a factory refurbished USB 5Ghz wireless adapter for around $20.

Prior to that I was using the official Asus firmware. I'll give the 272 a shot assuming I can find it. Thanks!

Wired connections work fine.

I tried giving 5 Ghz it's own SSID, actually didn't do anything, and everything I own refuses to connect to the 5GHz when done that way.

Not interested in a USB dongle -- and it woudln't work on the Roku anyway. Thanks for the suggestion :)

And no I've not tried access point mode, as I use the Asus unit AS my router because the Comcast supplied router is VERY VERY limited in port forwarding. All routing from the Comcast unit has been disabled. I have a Shoutcast streaming radio (single listener out, using an external relay serveR), and a small web server, and an FTP for uploading newly acquired music from submissions. IN short -- it's a full fledged internet radio system from my home. Access point would disable the NAT and port forwarding capabilities thus disabling everything.
 
One more suggestion, in addition to finding out what the clearest channels are in your area using a client like inSSIDer, the three non-overlapping channels are 1, 6, and 11 (in the U.S.). So if everyone else is using channel 6, I would be looking to use either channel 1 or channel 11, whichever was less busy. The other channels, like 3 or 9, etc. would be second choices for me.
 
Okay so I did some digging around, did a full reset on the router.

Apparently I'm a huge bloody idiot and I don't have a single 5 Ghz device in my house.

Which brings up an interesting point in that I should probably change my SSID passwords as I've seen somewhere in the web interface that I had 1 5Ghz device connected.
