Having bought recently a Dell Studio 17 and Belkin N+ wireless router, I'm having problems creating a stable WLAN access. I'm able to connect to the network and have access to the internet, however the connection is lost frequently and in some cases only last for some minutes.
Looking for advice on how to trouble shoot.

Thx,

Geert

Xirrus Wireless Inspector is freeware does a nice job showing you in realtime radar and graphs what's going at your location. You might need another Belkin N+ which can be used as AP in the area where it's weaker in your area. Are you using N or G? N only you can turn off wireless protection. G you need that left on. Belkin N+ is my main router. Did you update the firmware from 1.01.23 to 1.01.24 this fixes the WAN drop outs. Those intel Wireless N has some issues. Are you using the latest driver for that Intel WiFi N. Try using Windows Wireless Connection instead of third party utilities.

I installed Xirrus Wi-Fi inspector.
Coverage around the house is good > doesn't go lower than 60% or -75dBm.
Loaded latest driver for the Intel 5300 AGN.
Router settings as per attached screen shots.
WLAN card settings Intel 5300AGN

- 802.11 n channelwidth 2.4 band > AUTO
- 802.11 n channelwidth 5.2 band > AUTO
- 802.11 n modus > ACTIVE
- AD-HOC QoS modus > ACTIVATED
- AD-HOC std wlan modus > 802.11 b/g
- AD-HOC channel 802.11 b/g > 1
- Agressivity network search > LOW
- Security mixed modus > RTS/CTS ACTIVATED
- Wireless Modus > 802.11 a/b/g
- Energy saving AD-HOC > NOT ACTIVATED
- NON-compatibility with 40 MhZ channel > NOT ACTIVATED

Symptoms:

1) Xirrus detects network > brief loss of connection > reconnects auto
2) Xirrus detects network > brief loss of connection > reconnects auto however new IP address given by router, although static IP declared > Windows gives error saying IP already taken
3) Xirrus detects network > no loss of connection > however WAN connection lost

Symptoms most noticable when playing multimedia.

Thx for support,

Geert

So you don't see -50dBm on Xirrus Wireless Inspector. You want it closer to the center of the radar or full bars of green showing your router. So you need another Belkin N+ and use that as AP (access point) in the area where it show -75dBm. How many square feet is your house? Did you test the Belkin N+ in the same room as the gear your have wireless issues to see how that performs. If that performs better then get another Belkin N+ use that AP in the location.

Did a test:

- laptop 2 meters away from router
- security open
- playing xvid movie

connection drops out and only reconnects after switching wifi on/off.

Went back to D-link DI-624+.
No issues at all.
Have found multiple threads on the internet on Belkin N+ with same problem.
No solution found. Time to bring it back to the stores.
Any advice on a good N/N+ router?

"We did hit an intermittent problem with signal drop-outs while testing the N+; usually only a second or so, but long enough to be noticeable otherwise. The N+ uses Belkin's standard interface, which is flexible enough for network administrator types without being baffling for novices."

"I recently installed a Belkin N+ router. I am using an HP pavillion notebook running Windows Vista. If the laptop is fairly close to the Belkin router, I get fairly quick webpage downloads. If I move the laptop to a different room, maybe 30-40 feet away from the router, I have very slow connection and frequent network drops. I have already tried changing channels." http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7589_102-0.html?threadID=324731

V1 / running 1.0.1.24

I do have a question. Do you have static IP's for laptops assigned in the router?
Went back and connected the Belkin and did a factory default setting.
Running without security and allowed dynamic IP for laptop.

I did that prior but to answer your question no. Even my print servers they are DHCP and not static IP. Now why you say it makes it easy to remember what they are by name not by IP. I know if you attach WD Passport it really quick and better performance for USB 2.0 than Flash Jump, Flash SD, Flash SDHC, you can use 15-in-1 or 20-in-1 reader/writer so you could use SONY STICK, Compact Flash , XTRA and etc..

Static vs. dynamic doesn't make a difference
Currently running some tests.
In contact with Belkin Support.

Went trough every channel / with and without security.
No success. WLAN loss is initiated by WAN loss. Only affecting wireless laptop.

Came across another review.

Well better than the D-LINK DIR-655 I've own for a year. I am going to use Belkin N+ for now. Might look into those none draft 2.0 routers when they're standard. But I am no rush so until 2010 I'll have the belkin N+ I'll recommend it. You can always use wireless G Router/AP for backup. I do that here if N connection by default acts flaky then G would step in. When N is backup G would be dropped.

All my settings are Auto with Protection ON.
802.11n only.. Most of the time N is strong can handle the entire house then the signal drops to 78% then G kicks in at 90% with 71mW using DD-WRT AP.

Wired Gig is very quick and downloading is better than the old DIR-655 was.
I use VLC and do a lot of streaming my SageTV and Youtube Video onto the wireless laptops connect to HDTV or wired HTPC.

I have over 22 nodes (devices) connected through 16-port switch and 8-port gig switch to Belkin N+

Finally went to 801.11g on Belkin+ :(
Stable no connection loss.
Normal?

Remember 802.11n wasn't standard more experimental so it's going to G is standard and stable. 802.11n works but like all Draft 2.0 not as stable. It works then it doesn't, then works stable. All draft 2.0 routers do the same (Linksys, Trendnet, D-LINK, Belkin, Buffalo and the rest.

Client Wireless Autosetup

I use this below..
