WTB 4TB USB drive (WD My Book?). Will it spin down with RT-AC68U?

New Around Here
Hi

Ive got RT-AC68U with newest firmware .4422. I also have one 1TB Verbatim 2,5" USB 3.0 drive plugged into router. Main problem is that this hdd works 24/7 and never spins down. Under windows i have verbatim green power program for powering off this drive after some time but router just dont have such function. I know that Asus never had such function in their routers and drives can spin down only if got it in its own firmware.

Im thinking about buying bigger drive around 4TB and im affraid it will be just same (no spin downs). But since i already spend considerable amount of money for this router, i dont want to spend even more for hard drive with lan port.

Im thinking about WD My Book 4TB USB 3.0 drive (this one http://www.wd.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=870), which got reasonable price. Maybe someone got this drive and Asus AC router and could tell me if drive will spin down after some time of inactivity?.

For 10% more i could buy Seagate Central 4TB Lan drive but heard many bad opinions about this drive (mainly very short life). More over for around 20% more there is WD My Cloud model which got 1Gb Lan and probably would be a safest option, but again ive spend so much money for this router cuz i was hoping i could plug cheaper USB drives without probs :(. I just need this drive for my TV (DLNA) and for two Win 8 PCs (can do all things by just mapping drive so doesnt really need My Cloud software n stuff).

Thanks for help!

I have the 3TB version of WD MyBook and it does spin down. You can set the spin down timer with the software from WD.

Oh my god thats sounds great!. But but.. wait a sec (i never had WD drive). Just to be sure i understand u correctly - u mean that i can plug WD drive to my PC, and using WD software i can change spin down timer, and then plug this very same drive to my router usb port and drive itself will remember spin down settings i set up before?.

If yes then im going shopping tomorrow!

Regards

That's correct. The standard setting is 15 minutes and I only installed the software to check it out, because the backup software doesn't work when the drive is attached to your router.

When you use the drive solely attached to your router, you don't really need the software.

My drive is formatted as NTFS, because I have a SSD attached to my other USB port formatted in ext3. That drive holds my entware install and DLNA database.

I have the AC66u btw.

Thanks again for help mate!

Edit:
Bought 4tb version and he turns off just as i wanted :)
