WTFast Setup ?

  • SNBForums Code of Conduct

The rules are simple: Be patient, be nice, be helpful or be gone!

You cant even get intouch with anyone other then the forums, if you want to get customer service you have to be a paid member??? I have posted a few posts on this matter the last couple of days and no response other then other wtf forum members complaing about these issues.

The more I read about them, the more ><>-y they sound. I'm starting to debate whether to keep their client included in my firmware or not. It's a lot of bloat, and that animated fire make my eyes bleed. I'll see what happens until the time I get ready for a new release.

To add to my discomfort, I just discovered that their notification email ended up in GMail's Junk folder. Not really inspiring confidence either.

Ask them specifically what happens to Asus router owners that come with WTFast support. if they did change their plans right as Asus launched the router with all the marketing push behind it mentionning lifetime, free support, then WTFast might get some lawyers knocking at their doors really soon...

That's kind of an odd deal, but generally not that major of one that folks should get wrapped around as far as the RT-AC line that it was bundled with...

I don't think anyone would really mind in any event, as the client is also available on the Windows desktop, as since it is windows specific, and there it'll run a bit better with more memory/cpu available compared to a router...

My thumbs up with regards to pulling that blob of bloat out...

Even if it means that, for the first time, I would actually be removing a feature normally found in the stock firmware?

Just asking...

It's a feature that most people will never use plus if it reduces ram or cpu usage that would be a good thing

Would it be hard for you to put out two versions of the FW? One with and one without WTFast. I am for taking it out because it seems useless, but to appease the minority could you put up two versions.

There are already at least a few features I consider bloat, but WTFast seems to be the most useless. The short Googling I did returned no positive experiences with the service or the company's customer service.

I dunno though. The chance that some people get any use out of it might mean leaving it in is understandable.

Unless it is constantly running, even when it is unused, I guess leave it.

My vote stays at yes but at the end of the day its your project and not ours. So whatever floats your boat.

It means compiling two more firmwares, uploading them, answering the constant "what's different" questions, etc... I used to do that kind of thing back when I had only 3 routers to support - not doing it anymore, not with 8 different models to support.

WTFast uses no CPU, and almost no RAM (we're talking maybe 20-30 KB for the support code) while it's not enabled. If I were to remove it, it would be because I have my doubts about the service they provide, not because it would save RAM. So, not enough to justify the extra work of making two different releases for the AC88 and AC3100.

The service out provides is only for pc games it does not support consoles I bought my Rt ac88u because it had a good cpu and ram and the 8 ports if you remove the wtfast service from future firmware I am all for it :)

Hey Merlin,

I am a console player and sometimes PC, but from what I can read in this tread, it seems like it really does not work at all.

Now I have posted a question about the people who have this router and the free membership, well not one reply from anyone on there forum site???

I guess my vote would be to take it off since it is just bloat ware????

I mean how would it work for console players, I am trying to figure that out, I play on ps4 so how would it work, you still would need to connect to the psn server and from there it would all depend what game you play?? I dont know I am no pro at this stuff, thats why I come here to learn from you pros.

Yes, even then.

This is right along the lines of all the bloatware that PC manufacturers load on a system that hogs resources, performance and gives nothing useful to the person who bought it (unless they spend more money and even then, the benefits are usually questionable).

Doesn't work for Macs, Linux, Android, or iOS either...

Depends on how much breakage it could be whether to excise it out - and how large the blob is, as this could be a benefit for other purposes...

It's a game specific, only for pc service. It requires signing up for an account that links thru the router ui and then you install their applet on your pc. The Asus part of the promotion allows for one pc device to be using it. You can pay to have more then one device supported. There is a game list on their webpage for the supported games for the service, it's all diehard mmo's. The part that it uses an app that resides on your pc pretty much excludes it from use on a console.
I did sign up and installed the app but I didn't have one of those games(thought it was a different service at the time, my goal was consoles too). The app can be obtrusive when launching pc games. My impression of the Asus side of this was its just a service you get offered by buying a router, I don't think the router has any tech to it to 'make gaming faster' other then the requisite qos services all routers these days have. I believe the app itself is doing whatever heavy lifting that's required by connecting to so and so server.
