mikeas I've tried nearly everything on my RT-N66u and I cannot get it to play well with either of my 2 Xbox 360's on the 2.4GHz frequency either..

If I hook up my old airport express I have zero issues...but I can't say the same with the RT-N66U regardless of port forwarding, DMZ, channels, power settings, security, etc etc..

Wired everything works flawlessly...however thats not exactly a solution

Hoping somebody else can chime in with more ideas. I've tried several different versions of firmware..and am currently using the Custom Merlin 3.0.0.3.162.13 release.

Every other device works flawlessly (PS3, PC, 2 Macbook Pro's, iPhone, TiVo, Android Phone).. Kind of a bummer bc I love this router with this one exception

Just wanted you to know that you're not alone in this problem..I've read of a few others with similar problems as well.

For a little more info, but of my Xbox 360's are the Slim models with the built in internal WiFi adapter(s)

What specifically is your problem? Can't connect at all? Low throughput? Variable throughput?

sorry about that, this post was originally part of a different thread. my particular issue is that the throughput will not exceed 300kbps between either of my 2 Xbox 360's and my RT-N66U.

I've tried all the settings listed in the previous post and haven't had any luck.

Last night I tried enabling QOS and adjusting it appropriately as well as upgrading the firmware to the Merlin 3.0.0.3.178.15 release...

No idea what could be causing the low throughput at this point

How are you measuring the throughput, i.e. where does your measurement of "300kbps" come from? Please be specific.

Are you using WPA2/AES security?

I've been measuring that info simply by using the traffic monitor. The reason I started looking into this, is my inability to stream any Xbox Live video service in 'HD'. With my previous router (Apple Airport Express) I was able to stream Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime in HD.

Currently yes I'm using WPA2/AES security. I've have tried turning off the wireless security all together with no difference in measured throughput.

I also have an Xbox360 slim in my home and I have issues with it's built in wireless adapter as well. In fact I gave up trying to figure out why it had such crappy speed over wireless. I just hooked it up to one of my wrt54g's in client mode and left it at that. I'm almost convinced that the network card built into that particular slim is probably defective in some way.

I have 12 wireless devices here that connect to my router and that xbox is the only one I have problems with running Asus's firmware, merlins build and tomato. I didn't really try and see if anyone else had a problem. Are you using built in wireless in the new model slims or the addon adapter?

Back when I was trying to figure out what was wrong, tomato was more helpful at seeing what was happening. The xbox would connect and hold a connection fine with a pretty decent signal. The connection would show the xbox connected at 72 mbps but as soon as I start to stream a movie or get online it would drop to 5.5 mbps download only but upload would still show 72 mbps.

I also setup an addition wrt54g in the living room and tried connecting the xbox wirelessly to that and everything seem to work fine with the exception of the dated router slowing things down a bit.

That's as far as I got before giving up and just keeping it hooked to the wrt54g wired via client mode.

I wouldn't mind knowing if you're problems are similiar and if you're able to get help fixing it.

Thank you for the informative post NeutralGold, makes me a little relieved I'm not the only one experiencing the problem.

To answer your question I'm using the internal network adapter for the Xbox slim...which I agree seems to be the culprit. I'm not sure if its an Xbox hardware issue or an Asus issue however.

I've hooked up an Asus RT-N53 for the time being to replace the RT-N66U and the Xbox streaming is MUCH improved..I can stream everything in HD and have zero lag streaming over uPnP from my NAS (through my Xbox). This is only a temporary solution as the RT-N53 doesn't provide the same coverage (range) that the RT-N66U does.

I've shipped the RT-N66U back to Amazon and have ordered a RT-AC66U as a replacement. I'll update this post with the results of the new router when I receive it on Monday.

I look forward to hearing how that works out savalski. I don't really mind that I'm using an old router to act as a wireless client for the Xbox, I'm not really doing anything else with it anyways. It can stream HD quality content pretty good as long as I'm using Asus's firmware.

The signal strength is still good while using Tomato, but it was just under the margin for HD Content which was my only disappointment with Tomato. I don't think Tomato can use the hardware accelerated feature of the router so it's slightly lower on bandwidth.

But considering the Xbox slim has a wireless n adapter, it would be nice if it worked with my router since in turn it would enable higher speeds over the WRT54G router I'm using.

So I guess when you get your new router, we'll see if it's the Xbox or something with Asus's firmware/router.

Good luck!

I can confirm that the issue persists with the RT-AC66U as well. As I stated prior, this issue does not exist when using the RT-N53 instead of the RT-N66U or RT-AC66U.

I may go pick up an external Xbox wireless adapter to test on the wireless 5ghz.

In the meantime I'll be in touch with Asus to look for any further suggestions and/or report the bug.

I've heard good things about those external adapters. Please let us know how it works out for you.

I think I will also contact asus on the internal adapter issue as well. Since now I know that it wasn't only me. Maybe we'll get a fix some time in the future for it.

edit: I sent Asus a support request and also ask the Asus representative here on the forums via email if he knows of any others with the problem.

I have received the email, thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I have not heard of anybody having this problem before. I have an Xbox 360 at home that I will check this out on. Of course since I am at work now it will take at least a day (probably a couple of days) to test out this problem.

Thanks for looking into this Jeremy. I just want to reiterate that it only appears to be an issue with the internal wireless adapter on the Xbox Slim.

Savaski - Were other devices connecting to the RT-N66U over 2.4GHz well and your problem was just the xbox360?

Our xbox is the slim model also, but I am having similar issues with any device (laptop, iPad, etc.) connecting to the 2.4GHz wifi. See my details here

I only have problems with the Slim Xbox 360 over 2.4ghz. I have 2 mobile phones, 1 laptop, 1 Playstation Vita, 1 PSP and 2 Playstation 3's connecting over 2.4 ghz with no problems at all. I did extensive testing with G and N devices and even having the Slim connect while the router was only accepting B/G devices. I was fairly certain the built in wireless network adapter was faulty until Savaski was having the same problem as far as I can tell.

As you can see I have quite a few devices and all of them use the 2.4ghz band with additional interference from god knows how many other devices in my house(at least 12 other detectable routers from neighbors plus a microwave). I still get a really strong signal from my router penetrating 3 to 4 walls. Glancing through your thread, I'm a bit clueless as to what your problem may be since you've went through 3 routers.

Update

Hi everybody,

Just wanted to post an update.

I have tested my Xbox 360 by streaming HD videos and I do notice some lag/buffering issues when connected to the RT-N66U. This may take some work as to actually finding a fix, but I need some help from you guys.

Besides the aforementioned tomato firmware, is there any way to monitor the actual speeds you are getting while you stream? The best I have done is just choose HD videos over SD.

I can try and use Wireshark to monitor real-time throughput between the Xbox 360 Slim and RT-AC66U. I'll post up anything/everything I find this evening or tomorrow morning.

All other devices are connecting fine to the RT-N66U. Those devices include 2 Macbook Pro's, TiVo, PS3, Samsung Galaxy Note, and iPhone.

Didn't have much luck with Wireshark, but used the built in 'Traffic Monitor' on the RT-AC66U.

Both screenshots are streaming the movie 'Braveheart' from the Amazon Instant Video App on the respective consoles. The first screenshot shows the realtime traffic to the PS3 in HD, while the second screenshot is the realtime traffic to the Xbox 360..which couldn't reach HD.

I use "network meter" to monitor the actual speed from this computer to the xbox while streaming content. Top speed over internal xbox wireless while streaming to Media Center is 400 KB/s, it bounces from around 350ish. Lots of buffering and skipping with very low quality video. Hooking the Xbox up via wired to the WRT54G that's sitting next to it in client mode(connecting over wireless as well) and I get 2.5 to 3 MB/s streaming the same video.

Hope this was the kind of speed you were asking for?

I really appreciate you looking into this.
