Hi everyone. Network newbie here.
My core question is what kit to choose to use with an Asus XT8 (I already have one) to replace the service providers Adtran kit. And hope it’s alright to ask this here.
Context:
- I own an old XT8 (currently unused).
- I recently got 1Gbps fibre installed and just went with the service providers kit to begin with to get started.
- using so many extenders with their setup is going to cost me quite a lot of money over 2 years and it doesn’t work that well anyway - so looking at buying my own extra Asus kit and installing it a bit differently.
- I have chosen after looking at it to not opt for any external mounted antennas on my house by the way.
Possible way forward:
- simple swap of the Adtran router to the XT8. I’ve tests that. That works fine without having to contact the ISP.
- Buy at least one, possibly two other Asus extenders (or more XT8’s?) to service the various locations.
- to begin with this will all be wireless only. Next year when I can get a professional to help me do the work hopefully in the first half of the year (some of this is a bit beyond my physical capabilities) I will run one Ethernet cable for 20m (ish) to a studio building in the garden.
Layout:
Wall box is in the most central part of the house (hall) with the current router cabled to it.
- one extender then sits right beside that router as that’s the way Adtran kit works. Seems it just ‘takes over’ duties at that point.
- another Adtran extender (2) currently sits near the house outside wall (near an openable window).
- and the last extender (3) sits in the studio.
Performance at the moment
- router to the extender (2) near the outside of the house is great. Works well wirelessly and there’s no (practical) way at the moment of connecting these with a cable. At all. Issues with underfloor access. But that’s ok because wireless works fine.
- extender (3) can work sometimes wirelessly - albeit poor performance. Unless I open the window, then it actually works rather well !
So if you’ve read this far ..
- I will run a cable to the studio next year from
The router to whatever Asus kit I put in there.
- in the meantime I’ll have to open a window.
So what kit should I get here.
Do I use the XT8 and buy something different for the other two locations?
Do I buy something else as the main router and use the XT8 out in the studio?
I’ve read about XD series routers which *may* have better wireless range as the XT8 is only 2x2 for one of the 5g bands but I’m not sure that’s relevant as at distance I’m assuming I’ll be on 2.4 anyway.
How that makes sense of some sort
