I enabled YouTube Ad Blocker in unbound but still seeing ads. Does it work or do I have to enable other settings? I've seen some comments that it's not possible to block YT ads through dns because they have their own servers(?). If it doesn't work, why not remove this functionality so there's no confusion. tia

Not sure, but probably developer is too busy with their work/daily lives, you could put on request to remove that function. You read it right, and it has been discussed multiple times.

Your best bet : paying YT premium or web browser adblock extension.

Yes, thinking about YT premium. I use adblock on browsers but this is for TCL/Roku TVs. Where do I request to remove that function? Thanks

I use the function and it's not perfect but does work to block some ads.

the only way to block ads is to route youtube through albania or russia.

for me the unbound addblock actually works quite fine, I do not see any adds as long as I access youtube via the browser and the router, only for the youtube app it does not work

Use a DNS service like ControlD - where you can set individual video services to different settings.
You can then redirect all YouTube traffic on your router through Albania so you get no adverts.
You can also set other video services such as Netflix, Amazon, BBC etc to different countries (all independent of each other, and all to completely different countries if you want).
Also has built in ad-blocking settings and other things controlled by DNS routing.
Really easy to use and change settings using their dashboard.

Because it's a DNS service, not software on the router itself, you don't even need custom firmware like Merlin - it also works on Stock ASUS firmware.
