    RT314 as a switch

I found a serial cable and connected the router for my last ditch effort for to breathe life into this old but rock solid unit. When I try to connect (via command window or hyperterminal) , it tells me that it cannot open connection to host of port 23. I googled this and it tells me to...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

I suppose some WPA vs WPA2 Netstumbler charts would make a clearer case....and perhaps it also depends on the router???

I continue to be impressed with the depth and breath of reliable information, informed opinion and healthy debate on the web site and in the forums. It has helped immensely and I just wanted to again say thanks. In general, aside from participation in the forums, how can members help...

    RT314 as a switch

True, I dont need an IP to connect, but per the dcoumentation, I need to 'know' the IP address when connecting via telnet. See below. I guess I can locate a serial cable, use Hyperterminal and try it out (back to the future!) The docs do talk about the need to assign an IP if you dont know...

    RT314 as a switch

I need a 10/100 switch in one of my rooms and happen to have a long forgotten (Netgear RT314 router) unit which would be perfect if I can turn off DCHP Unfortnately I cannot get into the admin pages if I open a browser to 192.168.0.1 with a standalone PC wired to its LAN port ; I just get...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

Is the above a common recommendation? ie when using G-only, dont bother with WPA2 and just use WPA (and strong password of course)?

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

I can access all machines in all directions, but wanted to return to the above question. When I select View full maps: a) I do NOT see any wireless access points. The Vista machine itself has no wireless capability itself, but I do have two additioanl APs on the LAN. I was not expecting to...

    Mutliple G-only AP's

Actually only 2 of the neighbours are using Ch 11, so I should be ok. Also, I just walked the house, while connected to the main router in the office, and I got attached following results, so looks worthwhile pursuing.

    Mutliple G-only AP's

I think we went off tangent a bit re SSID - my orginal post was really to ask if a few APs in the house can do more harm than good - ie can they end up degrading each other. On one had its nice to have high signal strength in every room...but on the other hand one often reads on how 'crowded'...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

jdabbs - Thanks. I concluded tee same thing. I restored the firewall, and trusted ONLY the main router mac address for LAN. So far so good. Thanks again for raiseing the firewall point. In the end, this was the culprit. tim - I think this explains your earlier comment re "I'm having a hard...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

So you just have the one Vista box and the rest are XP. No Server in the mix? Correct I made the first Server as the master browser and the second server as the backup master browser. XP Pro, XP MCE and Vista Business are none master browser and it works that way. With the old router I...
