    How can you tell if a router is dying (having issues with an R7000)?

    You have two already swap them around to prove one is flaky. Any DC adapter. 12V, 3.5 Amp or so will work, just make sure connector is same(size, polarity). eBay is a good place for such thing.

    Tried ipconfig command with some siwtches? such as /release, /renew , /all. Able to ping the router any way? Does power light come on? If so is it blinking? What color?

    Is the reason you want to consider USB enclosures a budget problem? If not don't even bother wasting time. I've been there done that. Now I use 2bay NAS with 2x4tb WD red drives with external b/u plans.

    I used both. For me RT3100 all the way. 55Ghz signal thru 3 walls... depends what material. I had no trouble thru 2 stick framed indoor drywalls.

    What is your furnace brand/model? You may have EMI problem originating from furnace/furnace.

    If you could pay the professional cable installer to do the cabling job for you, IMO this is BEST solution. Always best choice is copper. Only fall back to WiFi if cabling is ABSOLUTELY impossible.

    Asus for some reason uses 19V adapters compared to others which use more common 12V ones. For exact replacement, I'd check eBay first.

    Internet connection drops when I plug in a desktop PC

    Tried command 'ping localhost'? Tried new cable? If losing Internet connection while being connected, it could mean your desktop is hosing up the network causing hung condition. What NIC is in the desktop? Intel NIC has a diagnostic routine you can install and run.
