    Enterprise Wireless Routers?

With respect I think that is a bit of an oversimplification, like saying Linux or Windows or Mac are just a "tweak" of a desktop computer's hardware because the hardware remains the same.... Yes, of course the hardware remains the same whatever firmware you use, so choosing the hardware is still...

    Enterprise Wireless Routers?

    TS-239 Pro II - use RAID-0 or JBOD? EXT3 or EXT4?

As regards using the NAS as a backup for my 3 computers, using RAID-0 doesn't worry me *that* much. The only time I'd need it seriously was if my computers hard drive got screwed up, and I figure the chance of that happening AND the NAS dying at the same time is minimal. If the NAS drives die...

Gigabit Link Aggregation / Jumbo Frames / NAS question

Thanks to both of you.... I guess there's no point upgrading my switch then.

Gigabit Link Aggregation / Jumbo Frames / NAS question

Thank you very much for that clarification... Just out of interest, how would those problems likely manifest themselves? Would the user be easily aware something wasn't working properly?

    1010+ GigaBit connection

The easiest way would be to connect all your wired devices to a relatively inexpensive gigabit switch, and in turn connect that to your ADSL modem router. This would hugely improve the speed to the 1010+ from the wired HP workstations, but won't help the speed from the wireless laptop...

Gigabit Link Aggregation / Jumbo Frames / NAS question

Thanks Tim! So no link aggregation needed, that simplifies everything greatly, thanks... Re: Jumbo frames, I just found that Need-to-Know article before you replied, sorry I didn't see it earlier, I have read it now. Can you tell me if my understanding of the following is correct, If I...

    TS-239 Pro II - use RAID-0 or JBOD? EXT3 or EXT4?

So I bit the bullet and ordered a QNAP TS-239 Pro II, which am going to use with 2 x 2TB WD20EADS drives. I've read there's some problems with some Green drives, although QNAP say this particular model is OK, but will try anyway. The drives will be storing mainly movies, music, and Time...

Gigabit Link Aggregation / Jumbo Frames / NAS question

Hi, I just bought a QNAP TS-239 Pro II NAS, to be used with 2 x 2TB WD20EADS in a JBOD or Raid-0 setup, which hasn't arrived yet, but am already thinking how I need to optimise my home network to get the best out of it. I'm thinking particularly about trying to use Jumbo frames and Link...

    Gigabit speed question

Correct, I use similar setup. A 100mb wireless router, connected by one single ethernet cable to Gigabit switch, which in turn is connected to all my devices. Transfers from one device to another go at Gigabit speeds.

Looking for the best Wireless router money can buy.

Hi... perhaps a touch off-topic, but I was considering the Airport Extreme or Express to use solely as an access point... wondering if you could comment a bit more on your experiences of the AE vs the WNDR3700... Thanks...

    Intel “storage-optimized” Atom-based platform

I saw this today: http://www.slashgear.com/intel-atom-storage-optimized-platform-promises-faster-nas-0576806/ "Intel have pushed out its first “storage-optimized” Atom-based platform, using the latest D410 and dualcore D510 CPUs paired with the high-throughput Intel 82801IR I/O Controller...

    ts-239 vs ts-259

I was just thinking.... I wonder how much hit on performance you get while using the bittorrent functionality. And I wonder whether having an extra core would help that, I would think so. It'd be interesting to do a performance test with, and without a bunch of torrents downloading, to see what...

Thanks for the review.... Can you comment on the noise (or lack of) of this unit?

Qnap TS-459 Pro vs Synology DS1010+?

Thanks for your nice summary list, it was useful. Regarding expansion though.... I was looking at the DX510, and I like Synology's thinking here... an easy way to add additional storage at a later date. However I am wondering, is there really anything different is using the DX510 companion...

    SSL VPN for Macintosh?

Or you could run Tomato linux-based firmware (one of the modified versions that includes OpenVPN) on a router such as Linksys WRT54G, Asus WL-500GP, etc giving you OpenVPN server in the router, then use Viscosity or Tunnelblick clients on the remote Macs: http://tomatovpn.keithmoyer.com/...

    Synology Makes DS710+ Official

I like the case design on this, reminiscent of the DS409slim. And the ability to later add the DX510 expansion chassis later seems like a good strategy. Look forward to a test of it!

Need a quiet 2-Bay high-performance NAS... QNAP TS-239 Pro II?

Thanks for your quick reply... If it's just the drive-noise I'm OK with that. I have a couple 2-drive firewire RAID units and don't find their drive noise to be a problem, it's just the fan noise of some of my units (which I find to be waay louder than the drives themselves, although I suspect...

Need a quiet 2-Bay high-performance NAS... QNAP TS-239 Pro II?

Hi, I've been looking at NASes for seemingly ages, and never seem to get around to getting a new one. I have a Stardom SL-3620 and it's awful - very basic firmware, slow transfers, and what I consider to be an extremely loud fan - so loud that I basically don't use it anymore. I do realise...

    ts-239 vs ts-259

I was also wondering about this... It does seem like the only difference is single vs dual-core, but as there is no TS-259 test in the charts, I'm wondreing how much difference this makes in performance.
