    RT-BE86U or RT-BE88U?

So I looked again at the Dong Knows comparison between the AC86U, AX86U, and BE86U. There is one important trend in the wifi speed tests that I overlooked - 5 GHz AC performance steadily declines when going from AC86U to AX86U to BE86U. I suspect that this trend persists across all ASUS AC...

    AP v AiMesh?

Too many people complain about Aimesh functionality issues. I've never once had an issue with AP mode. And I prefer having each AP (including the wifi router) on a unique channel to maximize wifi performance.

    RT-BE86U or RT-BE88U?

That's an awesome deal. I'd stick with that.

    AP v AiMesh?

I've been running my satellite ASUS routers in AP mode for 4+ years at two locations. Works great for me. Not once have I had my AP routers drop offline or act strangely. I run my main and AP routers on different channels, and no obvious issues with channel hoping as devices switch between...

News U.S. Weighs Ban on Chinese-Made Router in Millions of American Homes (TP-Link)

I saw that in the news today as well. The fact that TP-Link equipment is less expensive and appears to be well supported is compelling, but I worry about products where the features are too good to be true for the price.

    RT-BE86U or RT-BE88U?

For either router, keep in mind that ASUSWRT 3006.102 and ASUS Merlin 3006.102 are both a work-in-progress. Merlin has said that the older FW (3004.388) has fewer bugs. So depending on your usage, you may have some issues with both routers. With regard to hardware capability, the available...

OVPN HMAC authentication switching from SHA1 to SHA256

These have been very interesting and helpful comments. I've only been using HMAC. No tls control channel security. Must admit that I'm not sure if that's sufficient for a simple site-to-site VPN link.

OVPN HMAC authentication switching from SHA1 to SHA256

If I'm using GCM (I am), is there value to having tls control channel security enabled?

OVPN HMAC authentication switching from SHA1 to SHA256

GCM I guess? Why not needed with it?

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.8_4 is now available

Now also installed on my RT-AX86U Pro main/AP combo with no issues during or after the install.

OVPN HMAC authentication switching from SHA1 to SHA256

Thanks! If I change the TLS authentication method, do I have to generate new certs?

OVPN HMAC authentication switching from SHA1 to SHA256

I've had a site-to-site OVPN setup enabled since ~2020. At the time, I used SHA1 for HMAC authentication, and I have custom certificates made up with that configuration. I had assumed that if I wanted to switch to SHA256, then I would have to make up new certs, but I tried this morning using...

    Release ASUS RT-BE88U Firmware version 3.0.0.6.102_37094 (25 Nov. 2024)

Might be a while before they get back with you, but I'm interested to hear.

    ASUS Unveils RT-BE88U WiFi 7 Dual-Band Router

I just ordered a RT-BE88U to tinker a bit. I'm mostly interested to see if the wifi range is any better than my RT-AX86U Pro which disappointingly has worse range than my RT-AC86U.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.8_4 is now available

I hadn't planned on applying this upgrade, but Comcast had an unplanned outage right after this firmware was released, so I did the upgrade to my GT-AX6000 main/AP combo. Rebooted the routers, installed the update, and rebooted again. No issues during or after the upgrade.

    [ 3004_388.8_3 Build(s) ] available build(s)

No GPL update to incorporate the operational improvements touted in recent factory FW release notes?

    Release RT-AX86U_Pro : 3.0.0.6.102_34334 2024/11/06

Interesting to hear. The last time I tried 3006, GN functionality was only partially implemented.
