    Ubiquiti EdgeRouter POE

If I were you I would return the ER-5 POE for an ER-X and a cheap 5 port switch.

    Fast router with VLAN

Take a look at the following block diagram for your router: For best performance you will want to do the following: Keep your LAN devices on Eth1-5 Keep your WAN connection on Eth6-10 This is so that any traffic being routed goes in and out of different CPU ports while any traffic passing...

Has any one ever considered an intel switch?

I have used the older 500 series intel switches a loooong time ago. More recently I had to configure on in a modular blade chassis with 8x 10gbe ports. Most of the time Intel does not make actual switches, just reference designs. The partners manufacture and brand the unit even if the chip...

Edgerouter x or Mikrotik Hex RB750Gr or something else?

I was able to test it out in the office in up and down with a NAT masq rule and the "fasttrack" flag enabled. It got a gig through. Caveat emptor; it breaks between builds so one day it may work and after a bug fix it will be down to 300-500mb/s. That's the one reason people hate on 'tiks. There...

Edgerouter x or Mikrotik Hex RB750Gr or something else?

I don't understand why you would be worried about running QOS on an internet pipe running at 1gb/s. Most connections are serial lines as well as you only being able to shape the upload not download. Just get an ERlite-3 and keep the config simple. If a 'tik is your poison get an 850gx2 fit...

    Dell VRTX switch configuration?

The two options are access and trunk Access passes through a single VLAN without adding in the frame headers As long as two ports on the same switch are Set to Access with the same VLAN ID you will be able to transmit data as if it were on an unmanaged switch.

Time to Switch to a Managed/Smart Switch?

Link aggregation is not "faster" than 1 single NIC. It is broader. Eg. If you transfer a file over FTP between two servers on a switch with LACP enabled and properly set up on the ports it will max out at the speed of a single link. If you have two clients connecting the aggregate speed will...

One Large Switch VS Multiple Smaller Switches for Home Network

The best performance will come from a single switch. It will also statistically decrease the chance of a failure, since there's only one point of failure between you and the router. Trouble shooting is also simplified. Switch or not the switch. The best part is you can always add more switches...

    wireless router for wired

I would throw in just getting any ARM based router with a GUI you like Some decent choices are (in order of personal preference): Asus RT-AC56u TP-Link Archer C8 Linksys WRT1200AC

    Some questions about LAN cables

Correct, that's why for a home user a nice durable UTP cable makes the most sense. The biggest issue we have had with things like 32awg cables client side were breaks in the middle. Even a stranded cable at 32awg is just too thin of a copper to stand up to any sort of movement over time.

    Some questions about LAN cables

Unless you have a reason for it don't use STP cables. Improperly grounded shields will actually act as an antenna for EMI and crosstalk. Most cheap cables sold as STP are really just F/UTP without a properly grounded modplug. There are many times where the connecter is metal but never attached...

    Some questions about LAN cables

I would suggest staying with standard 24awg CAT5e . . . but based on distribution it may not be possible for you so here is the reference we use in the office where if it breaks this rule of thumb replace ASAP to avoid issues down the road; 23awg for POE+ and/or 10gbe 24awg for POE and/or 10+...

    Some questions about LAN cables

The red flag on that cable is the gauge of the copper. 32awg is too thin for anything but the shortest of runs. What are you trying to do with this and how long is the run? Or if this just a general "what if"?

    Some questions about LAN cables

That is not entirely true. I have had to re-terminate them a few times and they are rated to spec . . . just much more expensive to manufacture. Take a look at how it is here: http://s3.showmecables.com/images/catalog/product/Flat-Under-Carpet-Wire-Cat5e-UTP-Solid-PVC-Gray-1.jpg I needed a 250ft...

    Some questions about LAN cables

    1. All CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6e cables have the interior pairs twisted. They are then flattened out with a molded PVC coating pressed onto them so that they roll straight. They are exactly the same speed . . . however cable ratings are an honor system. Usually it is harder for a CAT6 or CAT6e cable...

Why No 10GbE For Home Users?

Well there is the The more complex things are the harder they are to adopt. A regular user conceptually wont understand why some SFPs work while others wont . . . especially if they "fit" For this reason I think if it does not have an RJ45 it will have pushback in widespread consumer adoption.

    pfSense box or Edgerouter lite?

There is no benefit these days to forcing 1000-FD vs auto negotiation. In fact there is a ton of equipment that (properly according to IEEE spec) does not even have an option to force 1000mb/s. The only choices are 10 , 100 , HD , FD and Auto. The ONLY time this can be a required thing is when...

RT-N66U w/ Shibby 1.32 cutting Internet speed in half

The issue is not Shibby per se but more that you disabled the cut through forwarding. Shibby does not support it at all. If you enable QOS or any transforms in Merlin firmware the performance will be exactly the same.

Switch to support Dual NIC server

You want to get a device that supports 802.3ad LACP This includes every single device that you want aggregation to work with from the switch to server. You also want a device that supports at least as many LAGs as devices that will utilize them. One LAG per device. Single port devices or...

    Connecting devices on different subnets

Can you get the Computer running iTunes off of the Arris modem and onto the Asus router? Bonjour has major issues crossing subnets and I am 99% sure that is the issue.
