I need to provide WiFi to a location about 1050 ft away.

  • Clear line of sight
  • No RF noise
  • Only one or two users who need to use Skype
Idea is to use a Ubiquity outdoor AP combined to a 24Dbi directional antenna in order to boost the signal. Both transmit and most importantly receive the weak signal from a smartphone...

Thanks but not in this location up in the mountains without even cell reception...

Main station is connected (parking) is connected to a Satellite internet modem.
Need remote access for camera's and other monitoring equipment.
Smart phone range is worse case scenario. We might need it to make a phone call via Skype.

I think the challenge here - it's time - 300 meters is 1uSec, so adjust the timing on the 802.11 side - smartphone's typically max out around 14-16 dBm for Tx, and they're not very sensitive on the Rx side - lot of this has to do with combo WiFi/BT chipsets in these devices...

24dBi antenna will have a very narrow beamwidth... like 5 degrees or so.
Hard to initially aim; hard to keep aimed long term due to wind, etc.

Do a link budget for the line of sight path and required RSSI for the data rate you need.
