I have a vague recollection of some code that you could use to display status information about the router real-time. I thought I'd bookmarked the page, but I can't find it. Any ideas anyone?
 
Not within the GUI, but via SSH, perhaps you were thinking of RTRMON, here:

 
The first screenshot looks familar and it was definitely via SSH, but I don't recognise the name. Could it be that what I am thinking about was a very early pre-cursor to RTRMON?
 
Or it might have been SCMerlin, but that has a different set of functions (more aligned with restarting some aspects of the router without a full reboot). It does also display much of the same info and controls within the GUI, see below:
