I also have 2.4 GHz issues on my AC56U. I'm going to go ahead and rule out the environment, as the issues don't exist on my N56U. In fact, my solution to the 2.4 GHz problem has been to daisy-chain the N56U to the AC56U, and connect to it with 2.4 GHz devices. Clearly, this workaround is not what I had in mind when I "upgraded" my router.
Like other users, AC56U DOES seem to work properly in 2.4 GHz, sometimes, for a short time. This leads me to believe that it CAN work, but something inside it is telling it not to. There's no in-between, ether. It either blasts 50 mb/s, or, more likely, 1-2 mb/s.
