Hi Merlin - so I just installed the latest firmware, and now I cant access the web interface when I go to 192.168.1.254. The internet is working fine, both hardwired (through router) and the wifi. However, in addition to not being able to access the web interface I also now get an error when I right click the connection and diagnose " Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings' this error doesn't show up when I go straight from modem to computer.

Looking for any assistance. thank you!

If you have reset the router, you should use the default address 192.168.1.1 , not .254.

thank you - I can make it to the web GUI now but that error is still showing up saying can not access proxy. Also - my wireless signal is very sporadic even sitting next to the router. Ideas?

Thanks!

The proxy problem must relate to some setting (proxy setting) on your computer.

I you are using Windows, check Internet settings in Internet Explorer where you will find the proxy configuration.

For home use you usually don't use a proxy, is it a corporate computer you try to use at home?

that's the problem - I am not using a proxy server and I don't have it enabled either. This happened right after I installed the new firmware and it only happens when I use the router. If I go from modem to pc there is no issue.

After you flashed the new firmware, how extensive was your change of settings? For example, did you test it after changing just the login credentials and the wireless security or even with an ethernet cable before messing with wireless security? And then retesting as you start changing any settings? I don't want to sound rude but are you happy you downloaded the correct firmware file ie for your router model? I'd reflash, start over again and see whether this glitch is repeatable and check how it is immediately afterwards before you start changing settings.

As for the wireless, can you run something like Inssider and see if there's interference from another source? Or try manually setting different channels and seeing if that helps. (A few months ago the last free version of Inssider was available; I don't know if it still is.)

You say 'modem', is that a ADSL or cable modem in between your router and the ISP (WAN)?
Is that modem perhaps set to deliver dynamic IP addresses (NAT)?
The modem should usually be set to bridge mode and let the router use DHCP (NAT) to deliver IP addresses to your local (LAN) clients.

Letting both modem and router use DHCP is most likely the cause of your problem.

Ok - Martinr - I just reinstalled the firmware (triple checking its the right one) and it is. Problem still exists. Inssider shows I have no overlap on my channel.

MattiL - the modem is Surfboard SB6141 - there is no way to change its DHCP settings. I believe that modem is a bridge modem by default.

All - I still have this error ONLY when the ASUS RT-AC66U is involved. I do have Internet service - its just somewhat sporadic and doesn't seem to work as well when the error is not present. What exactly is the error saying is happening? FYI - I did find some info online about making sure my computer is not using a proxy and it isn't. Here is the error file uploaded.

Found a reference doing a quick search.....do you have the Coupon Printer toolbar installed? If so, uninstall it via Control Panel.

I don't see anything like that in my programs and features in the control panel. I have a printer (Epson xp-410) but just the drivers I think.

Hi Nick, sorry I put you to the factory restore to no avail. Can I go back to something MattiL picked up on: you said " If I go from modem to pc there is no issue." If your modem were truly acting as a pure modem, I'm sure it would not be possible to go from modem to pc. My modem connects to my router via a cable with RJ11 jacks, rather than an RJ45 ethernet cable. I'm quite sure that if I managed to plug my PC into the modem (I believe an RJ11 will fit in an ethernet socket but can do damage), I'm sure there's no way I'd get onto the Internet. I'm sorry I just don't know enough about networking to explain why not, but something doesn't sound right, though I'll stand to be corrected.

I know you said everything was fine before the firmware update, but it seems to me, if you can bypass the router and still connect to the Internet, then the modem must also acting as a router. I feel sure that's what MattiL was getting at. And, regardless of your proxy problem, that in itself needs looking into, though the 2 may well be related.

I have a cable modem - Arris Surfboard:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AJHDZSI/?tag=snbforums-20
This modem takes a cable from the wall as well as a power source and from the modem either goes into a computer directly or into a router. When I go direct from computer - to modem - to cable in the wall. There is no issue. When the router is added into the mix - the issue exists. Both through wireless or through hardwire.

Are you still getting the cannot detect proxy error? We have to eliminate that problem first. Under
Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings
make sure nothing at all is selected.

What version of Windows? Is this a recent Win10 upgrade?

That is the only problem we are trying to address - yes I am getting that error. I thought it was a Windows 10 thing - so I restored back to Win 8.1 and still have that proxy error. To be clear again - I have internet connection, but it is sporadic and seems spotty - especially with the wifi. I have to constantly do a power cycle on the router to get it going. I think if we can fix the proxy error we will be in good shape.

ALso - LAN settings - all unchecked for proxy. First thing I checked ...I am at a loss!

Not just for proxy....every box unchecked (including the automatically detect settings)
That worked! How random - I shouldn't automatically detect settings I guess? Hopefully this fixes the issues going forward. thanks you!!!

Hi Nick,

I did what I should have done at the start: if everything else fails, read the instructions

http://www.surfboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/ARRIS_SURFboard_SB6141_User_Guide.pdf

And clearly the computer does plug into the modem! There's nothing at all in the user manual about how to add a router so that anyone with more than one device in the house can build a LAN. (It does happen!)

I found some advice from DLink about the recommended procedure in general for powering up a cable modem and router, but I expect you do that anyway

http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/...-router-to-work-with-a-cable-modem-connection

And in relation to Motorola modems I found this

http://ccm.net/faq/4853-connect-a-wireless-router-to-a-motorola-modem

And, finally, I came across this topic - cable modem and router not talking to each other - which might make sense to you, though I'd advise you not to do anything until you've read it through completely and even then only if you're absolutely sure

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2321608

If none of the above helps, I'd recommend phoning your ISP and the Motorola tech help number in the user manual. Please Tell us how you get on.

Martin

EDIT. Just seen the posting that went up 3 mins ago. Pleased you sorted it and that it was so simple.
