AC87RT - 5G Not working!

I am going through the steps of configuring my RT-AC87R.

I have not had 5GHz not show up. However, the 5GHz radio takes noticeably longer (say, 20-30seconds) to boot than the 2GHz radio. I have upgraded to the 2044 firmware.

That is normal. The Quantenna CPU takes around 23-25 seconds to boot its own firmware, which is provided by the main Asuswrt firmware.

After waiting for Cisco routers to boot up, I don't find this a huge deal.

Though I'll say the Watchguard firewalls at work boot faster than the AC87. I'm sure with subsequent code releases, ASUS and Quantenna will get at least a little more efficient.

5GHz taking that long to boot would annoy the hell out of me, just saying

at that point any clients that have the 2.4GHz password will have switched over, and if the network name is different it aint switching back for a whiille without a manual disconnect/reconnect

i wonder if netgear will use the atheros 4x4 chipset...hmmm

I am now experiencing halts of internet access from my laptop (ThinkPad T420, Intel Ultimate 6300N) to my RT-87R. So is my SO's laptop (Intel Advanced 6205N).

The connection doesn't disconnect, but one cannot resolve any Internet access. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the 5GHz network resolves the issue, but it happens again eventually.

That was the exact same issue that I had with some of my clients. I returned the router to Bestbuy. I'll wait for more stable releases and either get the AC87 or the AC3200 when it releases. I think it may be a better fit anyway, given the ability to segment devices.

In the meanwhile, back to the rock solid RT-N66U.

Well this comes down to people rushing to buy new router's, knowing the first 6 months of most new routers is full of bugs, and unstable wireless performance. I purchased the new AC87R, but I knew chances of bugs, and problems being there are very good early on.

To me though, I returned my Netgear R7000 to bestbuy in exchange for this router. As I had the R7000 for 6 month's, and Netgear had done very little in stabilizing things within there firmware. But between Asus, and Merlin, I feel this router will be better in the same time frame I gave the R7000.

Hell I owned the N66U, and still do. Seeing you have one as well, you would know how long it took the N66U to be pretty stable wireless router. There are still people not happy with the wireless performance on the N66U.

From me with first hand using the Netgear R7000, I would stay away from Netgear router's. As the support isn't good in getting there new router's up to speed. With Asus pushing firmwares at a pretty good pace, and with Merlin's help, you're better off with an Asus router.

An Asus rep pinged me in a private message to ask me to provide some info to him.

The crux of my problem seems to be devices on 5GHz having issues connecting to the default gateway, while still being connected to the network itself.

I'm wondering if this is IPv6 related.

My issue is the same on AC87 purchased this last week; only on 5GHz 5-30 minutes loses connection; reset of adapter finds/fixes default gateway. Not an issue on same PC on 2.4. No 5GHz issue on iPhone/iPad.

Running latest Firmware from ASUS.
Was wondering if you ever hard anything back from the ASUS rep as to problem/solution.

I still have this issue, it occurs on both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz. Solution for now is to reset the Wi-Fi connection on the client. This is the last bothersome issue I'm hoping is fixed in firmware. The only client that doesn't experience this issue is my (identical) AC87 media bridge.

I'm not sure if this is a similar/related problem or different. Running Merlin 48_1, my AC87u's 5ghz band disappeared after about two weeks - LED off, stopped broadcasting. The 2.4ghz worked fine, led on. I figured a reboot was in order and powered off/on. But when the router rebooted, the result was that everything was down. No 5ghz, no 2.4ghz, no wired. The power, WAN/internet and LAN port lights were on though. WAN/internet and the LAN port I was using showed traffic (flashing).

I unplugged and replaced with my N66u so that I could deal with the family and Christmas Eve and Christmas activities.

A couple of days later now, I powered the AC87u back up. No luck. I then put it into recovery mode - lights came up for everything, slowly flashing power LED. So, I powered off and then powered back up in normal mode. 30 seconds later, everything was up and running. Logging into the console, all the settings were as I had them. So it does not appear to be setting related. To say the least, I'm somewhat confused.

In the interim, I've upgraded to Merlin 49_4, reset to factory, updated config and will be testing further.

Settings are essentially factory, except for:
a) 2.4ghz SSID, password (alphanumeric)
b) 5ghz SSID, password (alphanumeric)
c) admin password (alphanumeric)
d) three reserved IP addresses are set for printers, etc.
e) DDNS provider set

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Some things to try (if similar to my AC68):
In the professional tab, Regulation Mode try d, or h, or d+h
Try specifically setting channels and bandwidths:
Say 20Mhz on any of the channels.
Try the lower (two digit channels) at 20, or 40, or 80
Try the Upper (three digit channels) at 20, or 40, or 80.

I still have this issue too (iphone 6 plus and ipad air).

After several weeks, the factor reset and the upgrade in Merlin firmware seems to have resolved my "hardware" issue. Not quite sure what happened. But things are running along without issue.

Everything is functioning and performance remains solid. No router reboots or wireless card resets needed. Hopefully, this is good news for everyone.
