I logged into amtm today, and it shows a series of 'Illegal instructions'

Check your USB (flash) drive — most likely it's toast!

It is very hot. Should I replace it with a hard drive instead? Seems like overkill for 2GB swap file.

It's your choice, but even cheap SSDs are more reliable than ANY flash drive. Look for leftover small one...

How should I format an external WD hard drive? In the first post here it says:
"Using amtm's 'fd' command, format the USB drive to Ext4 with journaling and"

I did this for a usb stick which I am replacing with a spinning drive. However,in the Merlin GUI there are 3 formats: NTFS, FAT, and HFS. Should I still try to format to Ext4 using amtm? Is it still supported?

Note: I would prefer to use HFS.

Usually, it will be Ext4 when used with add-ons but if only use for hosting data files (like a media server) than use one of the other formats.

To be used only for a 2Gb swap then it will definitely be Ext4.
