Many people around were talking how great this router is and because I donated the routers in my collection I wanted to have something new to play with. I have one AC86U and one AX86U now and honestly don't see the greatness of AX86U. In my Wi-Fi environment older AC86U beats it in both range and throughput to AC clients. It has different issues though and stuck to 386 code firmware perhaps for marketing reasons. Asus won't be updating any AC-class routers to 388 code firmware, capable running it or not. AX86U is perhaps going for donation too next year. AC86U is too modified and perhaps will be recycled. They are not part of my home network and used for experiments only.

@Tech9

I'm surprised to hear of your poor experience with the RT-AX86U. However, I'm grateful for and value your candid review. I know when it comes to hardware and russian, your assessment is on point. It sounds like I haven't missed much not upgrading to the RT-AX series.

The only issues that I've had with my RT-AC series is connecting backhaul directly to a switch (resolved by chaining RT-AC routers together) and AiMesh has never really worked well for me tuned or otherwise (I ended up disabling the radios on all but two, upstairs & downstairs, of my AiMesh Nodes and used them as in-line switches).

The real question is what do you use as your AP in your production home network?

Thanks, again, for your wisdom.

Respectfully,

Gary

P.S. Please let me know should your problem child need a new home.

I never played much with 384 firmware, but what I know is 386 base with AiMesh 2.0 uses VLANs for Guest Network propagation (GN1 only) to nodes and has issues with default configuration managed/smart switches or dumb switches not passing VLAN tagging properly. Not sure what the problem is with AiMesh 1.0 in 384 code base. I was about to test if the issue can be resolved with configured managed switch, but other things delayed the project.

I use 4x Ruckus Zoneflex R610 APs for few years already and no intentions to upgrade to AX any time soon. I can't recommend Ruckus for home use though because they are in Enterprise category with very high price. Current entry-level AX-class Ruckus APs are about $500/each. For home use perhaps UniFi 6 Lite/LR or TP-Link EAP610 V2 are much better choice and on affordable price. I have tested a few Omada APs and they are excellent.

Thanks, again, for your wisdom.

The switch issue was with vlan disabled on the switch:

I've been considering Mikrotik, but will have to look into Ruckus. Thanks!
