Morning all,

My apologies for not replying. I have been travelling and could not trouble shoot this.

  1. I tested all the virgin router's ports. They are all gigabit and give a steady 210+ mb/s.
  2. I used two fresh cat 6 cables to test
  3. All Lan ports show a speed of 100 mb/s in Asus.
  4. The image below shows Virgin - Asus is 1 gig. Lan port 1 is not used. Ports 2 and 3 are 100 (Laptop and Amazon fireTV). BG hive shows 10.

The culprit is Asus, I reckon.

Thanks every one for the help.

That most likely confirms that your modem is working as it should. Now you can try using one of your devices that have gigabit ethernet port to connect to router using gigabit capable cat 5e/6 cable. And check both in Asus Tools your device whether you get gigabit speed. If not, you don't need to do speed test as it will have the same result. Try changing device or cable and check again. Else, I guess Asus LAN ports are not working properly.

I am sorry, unless I did not understand you properly, the image is already re-Asus router connected the laptop. Wan is Virgin Modem-Asus router, whose connection from Virgin is recognised as a gigabit port. However, I will try connecting another laptop tomorrow evening and see if there is a difference. Thanks

Make sure that the cable between laptop and AC68U is good enough for gigabit speed. Make sure your laptop also supports gigabit connection. If both are capable with gigabit connection, try another laptop as you say. You can also try upgrading firmware if it is not the latest. Other than that, I guess it's hardware problem.

Yes. Thank you. That's the plan.

The Amazon Fire TV only has a 100 Mbits interface, it does not support Gigabit.

I knew, someone would bring Amazon's 100 mb/s limit, which I am aware of. Neither Amazon nor Hive is the bother here.

Asus's all 4 Lan ports auto sense 100 mbits speed. My laptop is a gigabit ethernet adapter. I am using cat6, which I have changed a few times.

Thanks

It would be unlikely to be a problem from the router side if the issue happens with all four LAN ports but not on the WAN ports (they're all part of the same switch and use the same driver).

Try upgrading your laptop's Ethernet driver. I've seen a few issues in the past caused by the driver, especially on devices that were upgraded to a new Windows version since their original installation. Also make sure that the network interface is set to auto-negotiate - hardcoding it to gigabit might actually create issues, as the router will expect your connected clients to be specifically on auto-negotiate (fixing a set rate and duplex does not work as expected - it generally requires both ends to be set fixed).

Is your Ethernet cable connected directly in the router, or going through a wall jack? In-wall wiring and the jack itself can also play a role.

Driver is up to date. My laptop is connected directly to router. The adapter is set to auto-negotiate. I have seen ports selectively failing in the past. I will try with another laptop tomorrow.

In the mean time, I am going to start looking for a replacement router. My requirements have changed recently. I will post another note separately on this later this week.

thanks

Is your router out of warranty?

Hi Guys, i've been following this post.
I'm also on Virgin media, hub 3, modem only mode, AC68 with Merlins 380.62.
Cat 5e from modem to AC68. Cat 5e from AC68 to pc.

FWIW - the PHY connection is just fine - try disabling CTF and Flow Accel (or whatever they call it these days)...

Just saying...

Indeed :)

try disabling CTF and Flow Accel

It did not make a difference.

Tested on another laptop. It did not make any difference either.

It is time for another router.

Thanks all. I will raise a new post for my new requirements.
