Despite less than 3% CPU usage, the gateway appears to be trying to thermally throttle and failing. Anyone know how to check temps via SSH?

Anyone know how to check temps via SSH?

Try this in ssh:

cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp

Or this in browser (after you login to the GUI):

http://(router_LAN_IP)/ajax_coretmp.asp

or click here (again, after you login to the GUI):

But I don't know if the web page works in 3.0.0.6 ExpertWiFi version of Asuswrt.

83C seems hot for doing nothing

Well... I'm surprised you still have this router. It's Asuswrt with makeup running on old hardware from around 2016.

Has anyone tried dual wan load balancing with this router? Is it better than the one on the regular Asus routers, which does not really work that well?

I ended up returning the EBG15 router. Last firmware update made it run hot, I don't think wireless traffic monitoring will ever work, you can *not* turn off the main wireless SSID (single SSID), and this was a little too much for such old hardware.

I would not expect load balancing to work much better right now. Perhaps after more firmware revisions.

I'm currently looking at TUF-AX4200 or TUF-AX6000 and flashing with openwrt as their SoC's are supported.

ebg19p - $159 USD.

Way better value proposition. Very few, if any, 9 port routers for this price that feature 15W PoE/port + fanless.

Same SoC as the ebg15.

Very few, if any

TP-Link ER7212PC, 12x ports total with 8x PoE+ up to 110W, built-in Omada Controller and wide range of Omada compatible APs choice starting under $100. This device can manage 2x Omada switches with up to 10x Omada APs. Already established SMB platform for $90 extra - doesn't make a difference for any business.

I understand your concerns, but they expand beyond headquarters in China. If the devices sold in China have to comply with the local requirements whatever makes them compliant is already included in globally released firmware. Asus routers for example display China specific menus the moment the region is set to China. What else runs there you can’t see or control anyway. Coolshare firmware becomes available days after official releases, someone cracked the code already, is allowed or assisted in dong it. China is a big market, big money involved. People found not documented microphones and Bluetooth modules in devices from companies with headquarters in the US. If you follow all the conspiracy theories you have to unplug the cable.

I wish TP-Link company was mine. It flies quite high on the global market. Makes some key people insanely rich.

I understand your concerns, but
There are no "buts." If a business or home user cares about security, they don't want mainland Chinese gear which follows CCP laws.

Like I said before, nothing out there compares to the EBG19P. If it launches in the US at $159, it will be a crazy good deal for what you get.

There are no "buts."

Sure. Backdoors in Cisco equipment were just a fluke. Make your personal choices based on your personal believes. What they are based on - you know best.

Does Cisco make a $159 fanless 120W power budget, 9 port gigabit PoE router that has a three year warranty? No.

"Your personal believes" does not change the fact that TPlink is headquartered in mainland china and follows CCP laws.

No, Cisco doesn't have any routers for $159. Their current small business Firepower 1010 appliance is way more expensive, but runs on modern quad-core x86 CPUs with 8GB RAM and does IDS/IPS in house without resorting on 3rd party help. Very similar to my Netgate appliances I use in 3x networks.

I just showed similar device already available on the market. I didn't ask for your additional comments. Take it or leave it. Use whatever makes you happy.

What is this law you speak of, and how does it impact you, a non-Chinese customer? I mean, specifically, not just a vague "The CCP controls them" statement?

Because they monitor their citizens to better control them does not mean they have any interest in a random non-Chinese user. These companies have different policies/requirements depending on the region where the product is sold. Just like US products provided to China also have different rules.

The average home customer is meaningless to a foreign government. They are only interested in their own local population, or in other government/enterprises.

Have you ever seen an actual report showing without doubt there is any malicious traffic coming out of a TP-Link device? Because that's is VERY easy to monitor.

I used a Huawei smartphone for a number of years. As I was outside of China, some of their first party applications had a clear disclaimer about the location of stored data (one of them made it clear that data storage was outside of China since I had an international SKU). I consider it one of the best smartphones I've owned (after my Nexus 4). I seriously doubt that Xi Jingpin cared about any SMS sent by a Canadian nobody telling someone "I'll call you later". When it comes to products and services, I am a pragmatic, I don't care about politics or religion.

👍

Don't waste your time too much though. Next time just get a Pixel.
I did, I replaced the four years old Huawei P30 with a Pixel 7 last year. Overall, it's also really good phone, tho it has some of the same annoyances of almost every modern phone: lack of notification LED, and the glass back is so slippery that I am forced to use a bumper case just to be able to hold the damn thing in my hand. Sometimes I think that phone designers don't even use their own products. What good is a nice looking glass panel if it's impossible to use properly without hiding it in a case...

This is a new crazy trend I refuse to accept as well. It's convenient to place your phone on the car console and it starts charging, but makes the phones extremely fragile and slippery. I like my devices in pristine condition and it's impossible to achieve without an ugly case. Why bother about the design so much then? I only see it once after unboxing the phone. Drop this thing once without a case and it's gone.
