Asus RT-N56U Gigabit 600Mb - Traffic Manager and network config

Hi, I just bought Asus N56U 600Mb Dual Band router to:
- have gigabit ports
- improve wifi range and speed
- have per-device bandwith monitoring and logging

I have Fastweb fiber-to-the-home with a Fastweb HAG router with b/g wifi; is there a way to use asus router with fastweb DHCP? I do not want to mess with another internal LAN (double port mapping, change IP addresses etc).

As for the other points I got that wifi range is more or less the same as fastweb wifi. Speed is increased BUT only near the asus router (2-3 meters).

And the asus router does not have per-device bandwith monitoring but only aggregated bandwith per technology (wifi, wifi5g, lan, wan).

I tried also the modem as only an access point, in this way I can leave my current network connections and IPs, but I found that on the Asus router I cannot see any more the traffic statistics, monitoring and logging.

So I am thinking if it is better to take back the router or buy something else, maybe the n66u or ac66u... do You have some advice for me?

Thank you!

Best regards,
Camillo

I have used an RT-N56U and cannot recommend it for 'improved wifi range and speed'.

The RT-N66U is much better, especially in the 2.4GHz band. The RT-AC66U is better in the 5GHz band, but is weaker than the N66U at 2.4GHz.

I don't know how fast your ISP connection is; but if you need to also enable QoS, the RT-AC56U or the similarly cpu spec'd RT-AC68U (with external antenna and better range/throughput) will be a better fit for a high performance network.

Of course the latter are AC class routers (AC1200 and AC1900, respectively) and command a higher price. This may not be worth it if you don't have AC clients to connect to yet, but depending on the QoS needs and your ISP provided speeds - it is the only way (with Asus products, of course) to ensure you're getting the full use of what you're paying for.

With the RT-N66U or higher; you can also enjoy the benefits that the RMerlin firmware offers us.

Where to find the latest RMerlin firmware.

Hi Leld
Thank you very much for your kind and interesting suggestions; my isp speed is 100Mb with fiber to the home. So I would like to try to use it.
Thank you.
Should N66U be ok?
Does it work in ap mode or can I use dhcp from my isp router?
Does it have per device bandwidth monitoring?
Thank you
Camillo

With an 100Mbps connection, even the RT-N66U should work (even with QoS and Per IP traffic enabled - which both disable HW acceleration).

If I remember what I read correctly (weeks/months ago) AP mode will disable the features you want. You need to set it up as a Router.

Seems like the RT-N66U will be a very good upgrade for your uses.

Thank you, just 2 other information: is it possible somehow to set it up as a router but leave dhcp master the isp modem? And is there a way to put the N66U standing up like the N56U? To minimise space and to give better air around to avoid over heating?
Thanks!
