I have an Asus RT-AC68U which I like a lot. It runs at a CPU temperature of 80-82 degrees C. Due to the vertical orientation, the heat dissipation is pretty good for a passive system. I am thinking about the next-gen routers from Asus like the RT-AC86U, RT-AC87U, RT-AC3100 and RT-AC3200 as a next choice. How hot do these newer routers run (CPU temp mainly) and what are your thoughts on best chipsets for the newer routers.

The RT-AC87U and RT-AC3200 are a few generations old now. The RT-AC3100 is one generation old. The 86U is the current generation. My 86U is currently running at 77 degrees C with an ambient temperature of 74 degrees F. That values does seem low to me. Seems like in the past when I would check the temperature it was around 82 degrees C.

If you plan on using Openvpn on your new router make sure to choose one that supports AES-NI such as the 86U.

Edit: and a day later it's back at 82 degrees C :)

I personally prefer to use passive cooling. I put 3 CPU heatsinks on top of my AC3100. The indoor temperature is 25C.

Those temps are well within spec...

There's quite a few threads on the sub-forums here - so perhaps a search is in order to get better info.

An old thread but for what it might be worth..... an observation I made a week ago:

I have two ASUS routers - an AC3200 and an AC87U.
  • The 3200, my main router. It is mounted vertically on the wall. It has a CPU temperature of 68C (154F).
  • The AC87U is used as an AP. It sat horisontally on a tabletop and had a CPU temperature of 89C (192F).
  • When I put the AC87U on the wall, the temperature dropped to 75C (167F). A temperature difference of almost 20C (38F)!! So I left it on the wall......
However my wife complains.... She wants me to at least paint it white.....;)

Yes, both on exterior walls. Outside temperature of about 0C (32F) and interior wall temperature 23C (73F) measured with an infrared device.
