Where to Start

I have read all 28 pages of this thread and the alpha builds from Merlin are getting a tad confusing for someone who just purchased a AC68.

What would be the best build for me to start with so I can contribute to this community on the random reboot issue? I think I should start with the alpha 4 build but I'm unsure if this is going to be the best firmware to start with.

My new AC68 router will be installed next week into an environment that currently has 2 E2000 cisco AP's (dd-wrt) and a variety of WiFi clients. (ATV's, RASPBMC, iPhones, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, Samsung Smart TV)

just don't flash alpha.. it is not useble...
Go for latest merlin xx.39

At this point just disregard those alpha test builds. None of them allowed me to pinpoint the source.

The alpha4 build was released previously to address the security holes plugged in Asus's 4422.

My advice is to run Asus' 4561. Not everyone has the reboot issues, so it might be fine for you.

If you have reboot issues, then use one of the following:

a) Asus's 374.583 (make sure you disable FTP and AiCloud)
b) My 374.40-alpha4

Had half an hour before a reboot on Alpha9. Thus, in this the problem is still not solved. Maybe I'll try the alpha4.

In the Web GUI of your router, go to Tools on the left side of the screen.

You should be at a page the Sysinfo page (look at the tabs near the top).

You should be able to find your Bootloader version in the information here.
I dont see any Sysinfo...

:( So I just run DDR Upgrade is fine?

If you run the DDR Upgrade and your Bootloader is already upgraded, it will tell you after running the tool.

Just make sure that you run the tool from a wired computer connected directly to the router.

As your opinion: Should or should not?

I'm still running the old Bootloader for now, because I am still trying to figure out why my unit will not accept my commands for overclocking the CPU and memory.

Since it is a Utility provided by ASUS, I would run the Bootloader. You may or may not have to re-enter all of your router settings after you do run it.

When did you get your router? Is there any reason why you haven't tried any of Merlin's firmware versions?

I buy from eBays. Shipping from USA to Vietnam :( But what is the point of overclocking the CPU and memory??? It is the most powerfull router now and you want it to be more powerful?

Yes :)

Overclocking the router has reported to increase the transfer speeds for the USB hard drives connected to the router, and VPN transfer speeds.

Upgrading the DDR would essentially do the same, as it is an official overclock of the memory from ASUS.

If you do not use USB hard drives or VPN right now, then overclocking may not be necessary.

As you said, the Router is already powerful.

I think I should do it. Nothing to fear :D
Or just because of old bootloader so when I use the latest firmware and my router have reboots issue?

No one responded to me when I asked if everyone who was having the reboot issue was on the newest Bootloader (1.0.1.6). This was what I wanted to know, because I am on 1.0.1.1 and I haven't experienced a random reboot yet.

The reboot issue hasn't been solved yet. I can not say for certain that you will get reboots, but I doubt that will happen. It appears to be a firmware problem, because when people downgrade to older firmwares the problem goes away.

OMG It said PASS... Let me test the latest FW again....

I never upgraded my bootloader so I would imagine im on the older version. I have reboot issue.

It appears that newer units manufactured in 2014 (as noted on the box) were shipped with the upgraded bootloaders.

To check this, if you have Merlin's firmware you can see the Bootloader version under Tools > Sysinfo (Not Network Tools).

If you don't have Merlin's firmware and you can telnet or SSH into the router, you can pull the version by using the command:

Code:
nvram get bl_version
