I don't know what the heck Asus' engineers are smoking or why firmwares are not tested thoroughly, but version 7743 literally destroyed my wired speed. I tried a factory reset with no results, now my download speed is about 25-30% of the speed I previously had with other firmware versions. Same router settings, same server, take a look in the screenshots below:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/6383283230.png - 7743
http://www.speedtest.net/result/6383319262.png - 7378
Back to 7378, at least until Asus gets their things right.

That speed is close to what I would expect if NAT acceleration was disabled.

I don't even see that version being available when using your link. 7378 is the latest I see.

That's exactly what I have thought, but I don't think there's somewhere a NAT acceleration toggle in the settings. Any ideas, RMerlin, what went wrong in firmware 7743?
BTW, in Chrome 59 some elements of the administration page look funky, no matter the firmware version.

I don't know, I have a 30 Mbps Internet connection, and I don't run Asus' stock firmware anyway.

Available on Asus UK website but not yet on US.

Updated my router to 7743, including the required manual reboot (without going through factory defaults).
Before and after the upgrade I have done a speedtest, there is no difference: my Windows 10 laptop with a 1x1 Intel AC 3165 AC adapter still hits the maximum expected of about 300 Mbps up and down (out of the 500/500 connection).
The wireless driver in the router is not changed in firmware 7743 , still 6.37.14.126 (r561982).

Weird, only showed for me on the Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 32bit options but not the 64bit ones. Well it does show on both Vista 32 and 64bit. Just keep clicking different OSes LOL. Anyway, I'll just stay on Merlin's for now.

This firmware for the AC68U also works on the RT-AC66U_B1 (dual core model with the front USB3). I have installed it on my AC66U_B1 and the prior issue with SmartSync seems to have been fixed as I can once again connect the router to the Asus web storage server.

You tried the windows 8/8.1 64 bit option? If not, probably, it hasn't propagated yet in your area.
You were right. This afternoon it is now showing in Windows 10 64 bit

Cheers!

No speed change for me at all.

You can check NAT Acceleration at LAN > Switch Control.

What's your connection speed? I have a gigabit connection from my ISP, you won't be able to see the difference on connections slower than 300 Mbps.
NAT Acceleration setting shows as enabled (Auto), but speed is around 250 Mbps. It is interesting that only download speed is affected, upload seems to work as it should, 500 Mbps.

I have just tried again, with a wired and wireless test.
With a wired 1 GB connection from a PC to the router Download and Upload speeds go beyond the connection max of 500/500 Mbps:

Wireless with a 2x2 AC adapter Download goes over the 500 Mbps as well, Upload stays a little behind at around 350 Mbps (which can be due to many reasons).
In other words, the RT-AC68U here with the firmware 7743 performs well, I even doubt that the 1 GB WAN port of the router or the glass modem is capable to seriously go beyond 500 Mbps.

Both this release and the previous (3.0.0.4.380.7627) release were just awful. I've had my RT-AC5300 since 11/2015 and has been super stable. Since those two horrible releases, it reboots randomly multiple times each day. I've made no changes. The latest release in particular also killed in-house streaming speeds.

My router used to be super stable and Asus is slowly destroying my confidence. C'mon Asus!

Before you ask, yes, I've contacted Asus support 3 times and have yet to get a response.

My only recourse has been to download the 3.0.0.4.380.7378 version and run off of that. I certainly can't live with the current and previous releases.

The WAN port of the router is capable to go beyond 500 Mbps, please see this in my screenshot. Maybe firmware 7743 has a problem with PPPoE connections, maybe is something else, but something smells fishy in this firmware version. It's not that I didn't factory reset the router. I contacted Asus support and I'm waiting for their response. However, I won't put all my hope in this, usually they redirect the issue to Asus Romania and, talking from previous experiences, Asus Romania's support representatives are quite incompetent.

On my RT-AC1900P after the 380.7743 upgrade, I not seeing any degradation on the wired of wireless side. On the wired side I get 900Mbps up & down.

What type of connection do you have? PPPoE?
Update: Wireless speed is capped to 250 Mbps too.
