With firmware auto-update turned on, this one updated last night. That was unlike what happened with the previous firmware version.

It's really fantastic that ASUS have supported their EoL routers but I guess it was wishful thinking that they could've fixed the custom icons bug that was introduced from a couple of firmware updates ago.

Looks like these updates were across most all devices. I guess they thought it was enough of a security threat and easy to update that they went ahead and did it.

Different firmware branches from different base GPL with different features available. What do you want to compare exactly?

Stability. Currently on Merlin tried stock for a couple of days not really enough time to evaluate when Merlin released latest. Currently rebooting automatically once a week after 14_0 was doing funny things after about 2 weeks uptime.

Read the changelog. If you had to reboot 14_0 perhaps this will remain unchanged in 14_2. Security fixes mostly, the same GPL base.

I will have to test both firmware for a couple weeks each. I saw the changelog with security fixes which weren't mentioned on the stock firmware. Also the Merlin has the dynamic security feature on the firmware page so it was a no brainer to upgrade.

Not sure why you need to reboot your router(s) regularly, but I had one similar RT-AC66U B1 before and it used to do months uptime on whatever stock firmware was available for it at the time. It was my VPN exit point in another country and was replaced just because Asus killed it with the bad ASD update some time ago. It was fixable, but I didn't want this to happen again. No matter what firmware you choose - it's perhaps the final release for this hardware. If still doesn't work stable for you - time to upgrade the hardware. This platform is >12 years old now.

Wow. Just... WOW.

Kudos to Asus for supporting this router for so long.

TP-LINK, you reading this?! Would be interesting to follow such an example, right?!
