It's not the router it's botched firmware causing the problem. Merlin builds 374-39 and 374-40 alpha4 don't have the reboot issue and are stable.

Thanks for this thread. I had the exact same issue with firmware 3.0.0.4.374_4561. Went back to 3.0.0.4.374_583, and no reboot since that.

Hopefully ASUS will fix this annoying error soon!

We all do there are 1000's just waiting and waiting and waiting.

There's been some progress on this issue, and Asus is hoping to have a new release in about two weeks.

sorry but why i must fix errors/problems as a consumer with a custom firmware ? that's not make sense to me and i feel like a beta tester atm. i have tested and tried many of the instructions given to my by the Asus support but the problem is the firmware and must be solved by Asus themselves. I have paid a lot of money for the rt68u and the solution can't be to install a custom firmware!

after i've contacted the Asus support again, got no answer after a week.
That's frustating to buy such a powerful and expensive product and after one firmware installation the horror begins...

but i must say the reboots after setting to default become more less...max 2-3 times a day.

regards

Obviously you're 100% reason, by the way since I've installed Merlin fw:
Uptime 3 days 4 hours 52 minutes 21 seconds

I never have router reboot experience.

If they have found the bug, surprised it would take two weeks to get a fix out!

I didn't say they actually found the very precise bug causing the reboot. I said they made progress.

Not only have they to fix it but they also have to make a good QA before getting it out to the wild. We all want the bug fixed as soon as possible but I prefer receiving a stable fix than a huge mess ;)

I am having the same issue where my router is randomly rebooting. Good to know they are working on a fix. 3.0.0.4.374.4561. I also went ahead and sent an error report.

I just got a customer care mail from ASUS stating that I should keep the firmware up to date. But the latest version they offer is ASUS RT-AC68U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.374.4561. I'm certainly not installing that with the random reboot issue still not solved.
Anyone else get the mail ?
Any news on a correct firmware version ?

Also have RT-AC68U restarting

I am on my second ASUS RT-AC68U router, and both have been unexpectedly re-starting. My first clue was internet connection blinking off occasionally, for maybe a minute. I was this on both wired ethernet, and with the wifi signal disappearing. The tattletale is the uptime counter (under System Log) that gets reset when these events happen. I exchanged the first unit as defective, but my second unit has done it twice in its first day of operating. This is with the most recent firmware (Shown as 3.0.0.4.374_4561-g5f5c8d8). I use a UPS and other devices on it haven't shown any glitches. ASUS technical support has been pretty useless.

I'm going to try talking to ASUS about it once more, but just about ready to pack it up and return it for credit, start shopping again. If they try to convince me that they know about this problem and have a fix in the works I might give it a try. It is a great router otherwise.

After having .4561 reboot on me for the eleventy billionth time... I replaced it with the Merlin build and been good since.

Progress...

Thanks to discovering this forum yesterday, I installed Merlin on my second rebooting router yesterday. Beta3 had the same problem, and rebooted after a few hours. I revisited the various threads and saw that RMerlin recommended Alpha4 as most recent confirmed stable build. That's just passed 25 hours of reboot-less operation (which I've never seen before during my month with this thing). I'm feeling optimistic.

Meanwhile Joe Song at ASUS support (who told me a week ago to return the unit as defective), this morning responded to a grumpy message I'd sent him Thursday, told me that new firmware to fix the problem will be available "immediately". Happily, I no longer have to be too worried about how soon that is.

Same issue!

Just bought the router today. Same issue as everyone else. Random reboots every so often. I have had 2 in the span of 15 mins (in fact while researching this problem!).
Not good for such an expensive device. Will try the new beta firmware. Hopefully that fixes the issue!

Same problem until i changed parameters under wireless Professional.

Preamble Type from both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz to short.

No reboot for 2 days 7 hours 39 minutes 21 seconds

It looks like the new firmware did the trick. No reboots since I installed it. Current uptime 11 hours 51 mins.

If i get another random reboot, i'll post a message.
