I might buy this router when fw 3xxx comes out . I had a chance to test one when it first came out and wasn't 100% happy with it , I will just wait until they get everything working probably . SPECIALLY the USB SHARE

So is the general oppinion to wait for better firmware before getting a 87u? I have a 68u today that I am quite happy with...

Then why upgrade? The RT-AC87U won't bring much improvements over an RT-AC68U, certainly not enough to justify spending 300$ to replace a one year old router. There are no 4x4 clients available, and MU-MIMO isn't enabled in any of the available clients. If the faster USB performance is your goal, you could spend that 300$ on a much better NAS.

I don't know about him , but if you allow me to reply plz

First i want a better coverage + VPN (secure home share option) + usb share . I have tried the NAS before and it was a great experience , but in my opinion i m not going to use most of its many features. I am trying to keep everything as simple as i could (All In One) . Too many devices causes me headache

The VPN option is already there with the AC68U, and the 200 MHz performance difference can easily be regained through overclocking if you need it for your tunnel.

While there is a slight coverage improvement with the AC87U, it's not big enough to justify paying 300$ for it IMHO.

And since the USB usage is not always reliable with a router, I'd say that could generate far more headache than having an actual NAS. :)

This.

IP attached printers and storage are just more stable, and usually better performing than USB ones. You also don't have to worry about USB controller chip compatibility with a NAS.

Yes you are right about overclocking .

I was thinking to sell my ac68 and pay the deference to get the ac87 or even ac3200 just under one condition if the usb share performance/speed much better than ac68 . Because we are having difficulties at home streaming full hd vids from wd hdd using usb3.0 . Believe it or not I haven't had any problem connecting hard drive to the ac68 using NTFS format as i remember , it was just the speed/lag problem .

Hi I’m new.

Owner of AC87R first day of release. I've applied all firmware up grades. Most recent being version 2769 for 87U. I noticed under advanced settings Wireless that I no longer have control over Freq or Control Channel. I reverted back to version 2678 and control was fully restored.

Anyone else find this to be true? Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

are you referring to channel bandwidth and control channel in wireless settings? I'm running 2769 too, but i have these 2...

Under Advanced Settings then pick Wireless. Then on list right side under “set up wireless related Information below”.

First choice at top is Frequency, pick 2.4ghz or 5ghz. Then 6th choices down pick Control Channel “i.e pick the channel within the above freq you wish to use.

For me under version 2769 I’m not able to select anything under the 2 categories.

However, if I revert back back to version 2678 control choice is fully restored.

USB performance is definitely better with the AC87U, tho you can gain some of this performance gain by switching to my firmware (I use the same NTFS driver for the AC68U as Asus does for the AC87U). That's where it will depend on how much you will save from the AC87U purchase cost by reselling the AC68U. If the AC87 ends up costing 100$, it might be worth it. If it ends up costing 200$, that 200$ would buy you a better Ethernet-attached/entry level NAS IMHO.

I heard the 87u had some wifi issues from the beginning. Has this been solved?

Depends who you ask. For me wifi has always worked flawlessly, while others are having issues. This is probably client-specific, and similar issues are reported for nearly every single router model.

I see. I am again tempted to get a 87u. Wifi is actually faster, if only slight?

power off the device and it will clear the nand and it should show up. For me, I stay away from all the usb based features on a router. Just seems sketchy vs a dedicated nas, or server.
