Hi, i bought the RT-AC87U just few days ago and I have a question about the usage of Download Master if the router receives the connection through a LAN port instead of the WAN port...

I'm using the router connected with a LAN cable to another router connected to a modem... with the right gateway and DNS i can go out on internet... however both NTP for the system clock and the Download Master doesn't work..

On the other side, if I try to configure a new subnet (ex. 192.168.2.*) and i attach the cable to the WAN port, everything is ok..

Is there something wrong in the first configuration?

Thanks

Any news on the next firmware? Phase 6 testing was in progress and the topic went dead?

There's a ton of us waiting for it.

Since the last firmware we've had the heat issue come up and according to posts here Asus recently found out what the correct operating temps should be for the Q chip.

Also some of us have had odd ball issues and logs that we didn't see previously so guessing they not just want to make it a good release but Need to as well.

Not to mention they just released a new router which isn't fast than the 87 but supports more 5ghz bands so they've gotta support that as well since its out to the public.

I'm going back to the 2769 September build. The wireless performance has just totally died on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz so no good. I'm hoping it isn't a hardware fault

That is a very bad decision, the performance has been confirmed to be improved in the new releases.
Moreover the latest *.3885 fix contains some security issues resolved.

It looks like a hardware fault. I suspect faulty RAM or something similar but it is out of my control. The wired speeds are fine but both 2.4GHz and 5GHz is operating very slowly and getting worse, about 1% of what it should be.

I am now back on the earlier firmware but it makes no difference. It was working fine last night too on the latest firmware but this morning it wasn't.

The status tab with the CPU and RAM graphs also wasn't working properly and had some GUI issues (thin horizontal lines through part of it). This is why I think it might be RAM. It is only a few days old so I have to get a refund.

If I have the choice again do you think I should just get another AC87?

Define:
1) number of wireless networks in the neighbourhood,
2) placement of the router as well as clients (distance, walls, storeys)
3) the 100% of what you think should be like and give numbers in MBps or Mbps which you actually transfer
4) the clients wireless cards models and their capabilities
5) methodology of how you measure the wireless throughput,

Then we'll get back to complaining about hardware/firmware faults in the router itself.
I look forward to hearing from you.

P.S.
As for the CPU/RAM graphs/status problem change your web browser to e.g. chrome, it works there fine.

I haven't changed the positioning of the router or antennas while I've been testing.

The problems really started when I went to 3885 even though I had some occasional slow downs previously on the earlier 2769.

I am now back on 2769 and it seems to have stabilised and is working well on my MBA 2013L, Nokia 1520 (AC) and my Surface Pro 3 which are all running on the 5GHz band.

I'm really not sure what to think. I am wondering if the 3885 download is somehow corrupted and I should simply redownload and apply.

I'm using speedtest.net and I don't want to use Chrome, I've never been a fan of it although I sometimes have it downloaded if I get problems with a website.

The testing is done using all these devices and the issues are on wireless only but both bands when the issues happen and the speeds to from 115Mbps which is typical down to 0.54Mbps when the problems happen.

Is a very good decision, i go back to version 2769, because i have the same issue. After go back no more issues or bugs. Is not hardware fault.

As Ankazam posted, it turns out the fault on the status tab for CPU and RAM is there for IE but works fine on Chrome. The earlier build though for 2769, it works fine for IE so someone has introduced a rendering bug on IE for 3885.

I now have it working fine on wireless on 3885. Mind you I did before, but it then went bad. I'll give it some more time on 3885 but if it happens again, I'll get a refund on this.

I use speedtest.net under IE but the results definitely reflect actual speed as when it was misbehaving I could see the slowness in the rendering of web pages.

Another interesting thing is the router will only update to 2769 (via the automatic updater it is the CURRENT release), no further and I wonder if this is due to bugs being introduced after this point that they haven't resolved yet.

Maybe users on 3885 are just beta testers for Asus?

So far so good with 3885, no issues at all.

I'm starting to wonder if it was something in the process of upgrading the firmware. It seems like leaving it off then turning it on again rather than just resetting and rebooting may be required.

The glitch with RAM and CPU readout happens on my iPad also so it seems Asus are in bed with google as it only seems to work on Chrome. Interestingly too you can also only send alerts from AiProtect to gmail which is mildly annoying as I don't use gmail much.

Probably a good idea with the RT-AC87U, in case the Quantenna side of things doesn't get properly reset with a simple reboot.

I don't know its a good idea i try to install 3885 2 times, and after install i performed a factory reset, setup ASUS again and works fine, but...the problem is, if for some reason ASUS turn of, 5GHz band not works anymore, and i needed a factory reset again, and setup again. Some people says, "wait long time and 5GHz started again", well i wait 30 minutes and not start again. i try to acess in Firefox and crhome to see what is happening, and not works. The only way to fix this is flah 2769 again.

There's been quite a few posts on this already - make sure you only use alphanumerics in your 5 GHz SSID and WPA key.

I find my Surface Pro 3 works fine on the 5GHz. It never seems to lag, hesitate or drop.

Unfortunately my Nokia 1520 with ac and my iPad Air 2 with ac all have issues. They both work fine initially but after a while they misbehave, the performance drops off markedly or in the case of the iPad it will stop working altogether, even though it shows as being connected.

Overall not good. Would it be worthwhile to swap this for the Netgear R7000 or R8000? It seems like all these ac devices and routers have issues with connections.
