New Around Here
Hello,

After having my ASUS RT-N56U reliably work for many years, I decided to upgrade a week ago to the RT-AC88U. I have more an more WiFi devices in the home, plus we recently moved to a larger house that warranted a router with better range. It seems the RT-AC88U is universally regarded in the media as an excellent router.

Unfortunately, my experience has been terrible. The first unit set up easily and I was happy to see it cover my house much better. I saw throughput improvements near and far range and all was well for about 1 day. After the first day, I noticed my thermostat, which is very close to the router, indicate it had no WiFi. It is one of the few devices I permanently connect to 5 GHz and sure enough, 5 GHz was not working on the router. A quick Google search indicated that might be a common problem with this router, so after a few reboots I decided not to mess with it and just connected the thermostat to 2.4 GHz. A day or so later I noticed that the 5 GHz light on the router was out too though it seemed to indicate in the admin page it was working.

About 5 days after that initial issue, I noticed my XBOX suddenly not connected to the Internet. Other devices also had issue and I decided to check on the router. After logging in and seeing no issues I rebooted the router than it become unrecoverable. It would no longer bring up WiFi and the computer connected to the LAN port stopped having internet as well. I went through basic troubleshooting (restarted Internet Modem, unplugged everything, etc etc...) and was never able to recover the router; couldn't even get to the admin page. I did a boot into recovery and erased the NVRAM, which I believe brings it back to initial firmware. Even after that it would not boot up. I decided to return it and Amazon shipped me a new router the next day. In the meantime, plugging the old RT-N56U back in brought me online in minutes.

When the new router arrived I set it up again and immediately had issues with my Sonos system. Apparently enabling airtime fairness causes this and disabling it fixed that issue right away. All was well until the following day, when Wifi and Internet on the computer went out less than 24 hours after installing the new router. I was unable again to get to the admin page and rebooting it briefly got me in there again before it too completely died; that is, it boots up (power light on) but never shows LAN or WiFi working. It does show a WAN activity light.

I decided to call ASUS support this time but they were of no help and suggested replacing the router again. I think I am personally done giving a 3rd one a try but hoped that perhaps someone on here can help me troubleshoot a tad further before I return this unit also. I seem to see some mentioning of heat issue and the router does feel warm but not particularly ho that it would seem concerning. I wanted to let it sit for a day and see if it boots back up. If that is the case, heat might perhaps be a problem, but how could that be fixed? I have the router sitting on top of a cabinet and it has nothing blocking airflow from any sides.

Anyway, all and any help is appreciated. Certainly am glad I had not given the RT-N56U away yet, as was my plan. It appears to be staying with me for some time longer!

The third AC88U I bought had issues with the 5GHz. Right after I configured it out of the box, I got prompted for a FW upgrade, which I did by accident. I never could get the 5GHz light to come back on after that. The WIFI Professional Menu did not allow me to select the different 5GHz channels either. I ended up exchanging it and the replacement worked great. I did a lot of searching on the web and saw other AC88U customers complaining of this as well. Some got it working by doing a factory reset and other methods. I never could get it working. I am glad ASUS replaced it for me and the replacement has been working great. I upgraded to Merlin right after I got the new one and then did the configurations. I agree, there must be some defective 5GHz units floating units being shipped.

Maybe I'll give Merlin a try to see if that helps. During the setup, both routers have always prompted me to upgrade to the latest firmware, which I've always done. Perhaps giving a new firmware a try might be a good solution to see if it helps the issue.

Is the 5 GHz issue an internal problem that cannot be fixed via firmware (a hardware issue, I suppose)?

I'll mess around with it some more while my previous router ships back to Amazon. Figure I might give it another few days before I put together the next return. *sigh*

I would recommend doing the upgrade before the configuration. Rather than doing the upgrade over the internet, download the firmware file to you PC first, then select it from the web GUI and select the upgrade button. That was the one item I did not do on the one with the bad 5GHz radio. I tried various stock and Merlin FW versions and could never get it working. I erased nvram, did factory resets, etc and could not get it to work. Very strange how all FW versions had the same issue with the wifi professional page not properly displaying the available channels.

Emphasis on upgrading FW first before configuring the router. I like to do my FW upgrades when not connected to the WAN and always use a wired connection. However, I have done upgrade via wifi and others as well, with no problems.

I'm running Merlin 380.65_2 on mine and it works really well plus is maintaining an IPV6 connection to comcast.

I have similar problem suddenly one day. I upgrade the firmware and then it took ages to boot up. Even after it boots up the wifi keeps flapping and not able to connect. I think I I'm gonna have to replace it.

The radios on my unit are very strong in comparison to other routers I've owned and are providing coverage to traditionally dead zones in my house. If I could just keep my IPv6 connection to Comcast then all would be just peachy with this unit. I swapped out the Ethernet cable from the modem to the router replacing it with a cat 6 unit hoping to clear up the signal and remove the original cable as a root cause of this issue. Klowik have you tried a factory reset on your router and then manually configuring it?

Eventually I got a replacement from warranty and now I don't have problems anymore. Definitely some hardware issue with my previous router.

Btw, if it took unusually long to boot up, and you can't have both 2.4g & 5 ghz signals working properly, it indicates some hardware issues with the router. You'd better replace it sooner. I think next time I'd buy a Linksys brand instead. I heard it's more open source friendly.

Unplug the broadband modem for about a half-hour, and then turn things back up...

One off - bad device maybe...
Twice - not likely...

Just had my flaky 88 die on me yesterday out of the blue. Tried a rescue - no joy. Dead, with just a power light and wan light.
I overnighted another one. I hope I finally get a good one.
I cannot believe Asus is shipping so many defective crap units!

If its less than two years old you should RMA it as it has a two year warranty.

I will be RMAing it. I cannot have the downtime to wait. This way I'll have a backup so hopefully I'll always have a working unit.
A shame I have to do this. What has happened to ASUS quality?
