Asus RT-AX86U Getting On A bit, do you think, VPN giving me problems

Hi All, Happy New Year, bit late, but still....

Well I picked this router, Still using a RTAC86U as well, but for a year now been using the RTAX86U without much problems, the VPN did match the speed of my ISP gave, think it was around same speed, every new contract the speed goes up, I'm with Virgin Media and 02 mobile, so that doubled the speed to 200, then it went to 250, think at 250 did see a little drop of the straight through with VPN on.

Then this time around a 18 month contract costing less, they gave me 350, , so I start testing the new speed and straight away I i see a big drop via VPN, and was wondering if it was something I did, contacted NordVpn read a lot of pages, seams the CPU speed wont do much more that 200, little more at times.

So I was wondering if there is another Asus Router that would give me a much faster throughput via VPN. Inside the router settings, the same web page is built in, its saying 387.67 Mbps, P2P would be great at that speed, and other downloads, also my speed is eaten up with all the smart gadgets around the house.

One other thing, the RT-AX86U is the only one, I do have another router the old RT-AC86U still working, but I made use of the WIFI 6 etc with the AX, SO its time to look for another router to replace that, so why not see if I can do better, its getting rather full with all the echo dots and printers, also have Philips (Signify) lights and a ZigBee interface V3 before Amazon started with there's version of ZigBee, so now a lot of ZigBee devices are on the Echo Show and some still on the ZigBee Interface . Just saying I have a lot of hungry gadgets, while I shouldn't complain, its all working good, I need more, for the future perhaps.

Also for some reason, maybe too many gadgets on same router, the WIFI thermostat stops working (Randomly), need to reboot to get it working again, not had much luck with ZigBee ones, so carry on with this one.

well lots of useless information, other than to say, locally using a lot of the bandwidth available, even TV is connected to a NAS for streaming MKV files

SO ! is there a Asus Router that has a faster/better CPU and can decode the VPN quicker? my 2, they both have the latest Merlin Farmwear, I've never bothered before, until my ISP gave me 350Mbps, as the speed via VPN was always close to WAN speed.

Thanks for reading, anybody getting have any recommendations, thanks

John

On my AX88 Pro which has Quad Core 2000 MHz processors and when using a WG VPN client connected to a nearby server I can often get speeds of 550/22 Mbps when testing to a PC on my LAN connected with an Ethernet cable. Contracted ISP speed 1200/20 Mbps however PC only has a 1000 Mbps port as does my modem.

See that it does have WiFi 6, but why 2 2.4gb ports, I do have a lot of old WiFi that does need 2.4gb so if I can split those up, might help with the overcrowding.

Right now, have 2.4gb and 6gb on the Ax, no problems there, but on the old AC router it's over crowded and could need splitting up, biggest problem is reprogramming all those switches and other gadgets, moved away from WiFi when I could, most on ZigBee now.

No VPN servers near me, nearest is 70 miles or more, ie London

So I'll go read, thanks

Quick look, says 2 6gb and 2 2.4gb, that could be hood

Maybe there is some confusion.

Wireless - 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Radios.

Wired LAN/WAN - Two 2.5 Gbit/s link rate and rest are 1 Gbit/s link rate ports. Both will derate to 100 Mbit/s and 10 Mbit/s link rates if needed by client.

What is 2.4gb??

There are 2.5GbE Ethernet ports and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radios. And what is this VPN used for in first place so it's so important?

So your saying there are 2 Lan ports at 2.4gb ? No use at all to me
There are four 1 Gigabit ports for LAN. One 2.5 Gigabit port for LAN and one 2.5 Gigabit port for WAN.

RJ45 for 2.5 Gigabits BaseT for WAN x 1,
RJ45 for 2.5 Gigabits BaseT for LAN x 1,
RJ45 for Gigabits BaseT for LAN x 4,

So a total of 5 LAN ports and 1 WAN port.

So I was wondering if there is another Asus Router that would give me a much faster throughput via VPN.
contacted NordVpn

Simple answer - no Asus router will give you much faster speed. NordVPN uses OpenVPN and doesn't provide WireGuard configuration files. They use WireGuard based Nordlynx. No Nordlynx configuration options in Asuswrt. The router discussed above will have similar performance to your RT-AX86U. Save your money.

Hi , Joe scian, well no point then, I do load configuration files, just username and password, job done.

I have a laptop that has 6gb wifi but now its connected to one of the 2.5gb port, the other 1gb port goes somewhere else forget now, they are all in use, ZigBee isn't WiFi so that's another used, did try connecting routers together, one upstairs one downstairs, lost a lot of speed, it was new to me, but didn't like it in the end, think the VPN suffers in the upstairs one, very slow speed, but that was early days, I do need another router, might as well get the AX then, it's one I know..

As for VPN, I take it you don't use one, well I do, don't want anyone seeing where I'm going, the department of fisheries, spy on us, along with others that have no right to know other than putting up custom advertisements, also the firewall is a good thing to have, had NordVpn for 8 years or more, I'm in the USA, so less 20% vat 😁

I thought by now there would be a router that can handle VPN faster, I'm greedy I think, want the fastest even if 90% of the time I'm just browsing Amazon, via London server, even the Bank don't mind me using VPN, as thire app probes this Samsung S24, anyway, so they know who I am. But there are plenty of companies spying on where your going, what your looking for etc, I was searching for a new washing machine before VPN the advertising for washing machines were everywhere, but not any more, so it's something you want or by the sounds of it, you don't want it, all my TV, echo shows, Blu-ray players go straight through, no point in using VPN for them, and having to change to a particular VPN server just to watch netflix from another country isn't needed, happy with the UK selection, until I watched them all, then use to stop paying for a month or 3 until a new lot of movies was there, can't do that anymore, as the wife's WWE is now on netflix, so at least I don't pay for it via WWE direct, so I used VPN for protection and privacy, while on a phone or laptop, the rest of the house don't use VPN, that's what I like about the Asus Router, can have a device set to use the WAN clear, or set a device to go through the VPN.

Not that I need to answer '

Sorry going right off topic, does it matter to you what I use it for? I still want to make use of the 350Mbs connection, super fast for sending my home movies to the rest of the family, now that the upload speed is higher also.

I need good speed house is full of devices, being disabled, means I can just ask Alexa to do anything.

AND NO THE BPN ISNT USED FOR PORN JUST IN CASE YOUR MIND THINKS THAT WAY

Thanks, one min I'm talking about the old 2.4g WiFi for a lot of older devices, for example Some of my contact door switches are using the old 2.4gb got no choice, I was shocked to learn the Amazon Echo show 15 don't have 5gb WiFi only 2.4gb

Then I talk about the Lan parts, this router has a 1Gb port, and most of the laptops max out at that speed. This AX router also has a 2.5Gb Lan port, so I used it for something, can't think what, might be another laptop, it's been over a year.

Then 6Gb WiFi came, I didn't know all our Samsung phones support 6gb, also HP laptop support 6Gb, but moved away from WiFi on laptops, both connected direct now.

I also have other routers for things like door contact switches, early ones are WiFi, new ones use ZigBee, but I'm not replacing them all, too many, do will get around to it.

I have 4 Epson printers, all connected via a ZigBee socket, so I can switch them on and off, they all have an email address.

So it's crowded around here, and things can slow down if I don't spend time planning.

So want faster VPN, 275 be ok I think, 350 given, but tested at 380

Sorry was talking about connect speeds on WiFi for my older equipment they need WiFi 2.5, rest is now using 6Gb WiFi

What I use VPN for? Because I do, you don't need to know why.

And I have a 2.4gb not 2.5hb, should have said a lot more, but I'm also a radio ham, made up 2.4gb for an older radio

Same as what I got already then

Yet someone is saying I won't get more than 200 ? Don't know what WG VPN is, only ever used the Panama company, month free trial years ago, I was getting 50Mbps from my ISP at the time, when the joined the 02 mobile company, they doubled everyone's speed for free, now ever 18 months when I renew contract with Virgin Media, they don't want to loose me, so always get a faster speed without asking, I just want to keep paying same price if I can.

No home router will give you the "gb" you are looking for with NordVPN. You have to figure out something else.
