I received the router last week and had several issues during the setup.

1. VPN Server IPSec Client connect may cause the router reboot itself, even sometimes can connect but cannot browser to the internet.
2. Cannot turn off Smart Connect to manually adjust the Wifi channels settings. Click Smart Connect OFF button and then Apply but no response, cannot switch to the Channels setting page.
2. One of the CPU coil always stay at 100% usage. It may happen on any of 4 coils randomly. Reboot the router may fix but not absolutely work.
4. Adjust settings may hang the router, need manually power off and on.

Out of that list, only the smart connect issue has happened here. For me, that usually happens if you connect a device to the 6GHz band. If you don't use 6GHZ then it shouldn't be an issue. With that said though, I still had 3 separate SSIDs even though it showed smart connect on. So I think it might be a specific feature to using 6GHz.

@Wyllio Do you happen to have any experience with WiFi smart plugs / lights with this router? I don't have the stability issues with this router, and my smart devices as I did with the AX86U when it was new, but I did notice that my lights can take a minute or two to reconnect after a router reboot before they are ready to use, but once they are connected, they stay connected as do all other devices.

I've created an iOT network for the lights, and smart plugs both use different IP ranges from the main network. Is it the nature of WiFi 7 routers to take a bit longer to become fully ready after a reboot since they have more bands to activate ?

Overall, the router has been solid, and one thing I did have happen initially but seems to be OK now, is my 2 Amazon smart plugs wouldn't connect to the 2.4ghz band if the 6Ghz was enabled, but that seems to have sorted itself out and everything is working now.

Yeah, everything just works here as well. I was just curious about the slower reconnects on a router reboot e.g. after firmware update, or changing config. By default it was 2.4/5Ghz for me as well, but I changed it to 2.4 only as I don't think any of my iOT devices will ever use the 5ghz devices. The only ones I can think of that can, are my amazon echo speakers and I put them on 2.4, and they are on the main 2.4 ghz network. The only reason the bulbs are on an iOT network is for stability. I found they kept disconnecting on the main network when I started with the RT-AX86U a couple years ago, so put them on a separate guest network with a different subnet to fix the problem. The amazon smart plugs were also on the main network too but decided to reconfigure them and put them on their own iOT network with a different subnet as well. So I have two iOT networks configured with this router with their own subnet. I might redo the lights network though and let it access the main network. They have features that require them to talk to the main network devices. Otherwise they are limited by cloud functionality only, which is fine, as they still work, but if I were to configure them with "MATTR" I could potentially get functionality if the internet goes down. I use Wiz connected lights which are managed by the same company who does Philips Hue. Wiz bulbs don't require a separate hub as Hue do.

So, yeah, overall happy with the router, just really wanted to find out about the smart device functionality, since it's a new router, with newer standards, and software.

When I tried getting online this morning I was getting a globe symbol instead of the ethernet symbol and when I checked the router it had moved itself to the secondary provider after a scheduled reboot but would not fall back to the primary. I tried rebooting but it insisted on staying on the secondary so I ended up disabling dual wan and then it reconnected to the primary ISP.

Not happy at all and will probably take both units back to the store today and look for another router.

May be you can wait for their future firmware update one to two times. It is a new released router may be need firmware fine tune to reach stable

Thanks for the feedback, everything is working as it should. I was mainly curious since each new generation of WiFi seems to have it's quirks regarding legacy devices when it first comes out.

I had the same kind of instabilities with the RT-AX86U when I first got it. My smart lights wouldn't stay connected and made things very unreliable with automations. As time went on things stabilized with the firmware releases, and I also learned a better way to configure things. I didn't need the WiFi 7 upgrade, I was mainly looking for a router with multiple 2.5G ports over 1G only so I could take advantage of faster speeds that are available in this area, well faster speeds, and more bandwidth for multiple activities that would help when I started doing more activity at one time. In addition to that, I wanted access to the newer software that the older router software wouldn't get. Overall I've been happy with it, and I've really not had the same kind of stability issues with the new router as I did with the RT-AX86U when I first got it.

I'm going to keep an eye out for the 98 pro going on sale again. I was eying it up about 4 weeks ago when it was down to $700 but I think it will go lower soon since its almost a year old now. If only another company would offer tri or quad band wifi 7 with dual wan and two or more 10gb ports.

You can try, but both run the same firmware base with almost guaranteed the same Dual WAN code.

Hasn't dual WAN been a regular hit or miss function with Asus routers? I remember seeing problems mentioned with it on other models as well. It's been a while though.

I personally never had it working reliably on all 3004 384, 386 and 388 code bases. Never tested it on 3006 102 code base. The most common ill effect is what @Gregory Phillips described above - unreliable switching between active WAN connections. It may or may not happen. Folks with USB LTE modems and limited data plan may find their plan drained completely because the router failed to switch back to restored primary WAN connection.

Some folks reported working Dual WAN for their needs, perhaps also depends on hardware compatibility between devices providing WAN connection and the Asus router. The reason I suggested @Gregory Phillips to try with GT-BE98 Pro. It's a different hardware router, may work better.

I would have to check with Verizon wireless, but I have unlimited data to my phone, but i think my plan is if i use up to a certain amount as a hotspot it will get throttled. I had considered connecting my phone to my router if my wired connection goes out to see how the 4G functionally works. The only issues I've had was the auto wan detection doesn't aways work. I simply just selected the port I wanted to use and it's been fine since.

Test it and see if it works for you. There is no other recommendation. Since you are on stock Asuswrt - report eventually encountered issues to Asus in Feedback Firm for a chance to get them fixed.
