The RT-N66U has been doing pretty well: good coverage and speed. But now I experienced 2 times loss in internet speed, it dropped from 50 Mbits/sec to below 5 Mbits/sec. After rebooting the RT-N66U speed is normal. Is this a fw bug or pure coincidence?

Not always, unfortunately. If it's not listed the only way is the one I suggested.

Not always listed? Really? I haven't encountered one instance where I have a hdd plugged into one of the USB's and not seeing it in windows explorer...

Could be. However, please keep in mind there is no perfect router switch etc. A reboot flashes out the tables etc., and starts off clean on all levels. As an analogy, if you don't reboot a PC for a long time and you just put it in sleep mode etc, suspending all services/processes, at some point something will crash and you will be required to reboot, or it will do it on its own. I wouldn't be concerned if this is just an isolated case for you.

Cheers,
G37x

Yes this happens randomly and not just for the rtn-66u, but for any device attached to a wins network. The only way to get rid of this behavior is to add in each PC's hosts file the relevant entries. This is normally due to the automatic election of a wins server in case there's not a predefined one or if there's more than one predefined wins server. Another case is if a predefined wins server is switched on after another wins server got that role + several other unclear causes.

The stock ASUS firmware's QOS page talks of an automatic mode once you enter your upload and download speed. Has anyone looked at the source code to see exactly what this "automatic" mode settings actually are? I'm curious because it doesn't slow down my torrent uploads unless I put them in manually.
Im also wondering if there is any Layer7 QOS happening on this router or is it purely by port and packet type??

Are others systems on your network using bandwidth at the same time you're downloading these torrents ? The router would have no reason to slow down the torrent downloading unless there was a device with a higher priority task using bandwidth also.

So far 48 hrs on 112 no drops , speed a touch down from 108 though , nothing that bad , still tops the 3700 . All devices show up in gui , unlike 108 where they sometimes appeared .
Anyone find fault yet with 112 ?

Does anyone know how to name/edit the mac addresses on the N66U? I'd like to name ( create device friendly names) on all the MAC addresses in my Client Status for easy reference to correlate with my connected devices.

I'm running stock v.112

Problem with refreshing the client list. Sometimes when I click refresh I'm getting zero clients and need to reboot router to get it to work correctly. Has done it 3 times today. Installed .114 and so far it's been working fine.

FW .116b for some reason is slowing down and showing very choppy speed test downloads. .112 and .114 downloads have been smooth and fast.

I'll inform ASUS wireless support.

Firmware reviews are excellent topics. Would .112 be better served with it's own topic heading?

Hey folks, I just got my RTN66U a couple of days ago, and I am confused on how to view the usb flash drive I plugged in to it over my network.

We have 2 Mac's and 2 PC's in the house. On one of the PC's I went into the RTN66U webpage and went to the usb application, clicked on AiDisk, then on the next page where it says "1 2 3, My FTP server is shared, Decide how to share your folders", I chose "limitless access rights", (Now here is where I don't know if I am doing the right thing)...I chose "skip Asus DDNS settings" then the next page says "configuration is successful" DDNS is not enabled yet.

Now I would think this would allow all the computers on my network, both PC and Mac to see the usb drive but when I go to Finder on the Mac's it's not there.

Can someone please tell me how I can set it up so I can view the usb drive on all of the computers in the house?

Am I doing the right thing by selecting to skip the Asus DDNS settings?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hello: Check out this Youtube video. It describes setting up FTP on the N56U but I think this may help answer your DDNS setting question for the N66U too. ( I haven't tried it yet myself)

The alternative if you just want to share files over your home network between PCs/Macs would be to set up File Sharing on your Mac and HomeSharing on your PC ( see below) and plug in your USB into one of your computers on the network..

The RT-N66U is still doing pretty well on 3.90 fw.
I just can't find a way to open a port for my utorrent client. On TP-LINK and Netgear router it was no problem.

Is there a NAT setting? Or port forwarding option?
Can someone please help?

Anybody know what the largest supported size is for the MicroSD slot? Thanks.

There is a "Virtual Server / Port Forwarding" tab in the WAN section. Is that what you are looking for?

3 Terrabyte Drives

Does anyone have any experience with attaching 3TB drives (NTFS Formatted) to the USB port?

Did it recognise the entire drive? Or did it have the same issues as the 56?

I searched the forum and could not find an answer. Thanks.

Any help appreciated, I'd like to buy this router, this is the last remaining question I need answered before picking it up.

I tried that, selected Bittorrent, changed ports, selected TCP/UDP. Theclient still says ports are not open. What do i need to fill in at local port?
